The Dark Mechanicum received their first models for Legions Imperialis in December and I was lucky enough to be sent some. In this post, I paint up and share my colour scheme for the Serperos ‘Overlord’ Heavy Stalkers.

Accompanied by some vanguard Iron Warrior units a trio of Serperos Heavy Stalkers stalk the Martian surface.

Models were kindly supplied to me by Games Workshop. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Dark Mechanicum have always been hinted at in the lore and I can’t remember any models being made for them (Maybe Vashtor for Warhammer 40,000). Things like the Venomcrawlers and Defiler are Dark Mechanicum constructs for Chaos Space Marine armies and you can see some of that design influencer in their 10,000 year old cousins, the Serperos Heavy Stalkers. They’re all daemonic controlled, spidery-like machine constructs boasting heavy weapons.

The lost STCs were unleashed from the Vaults of Moravec on Mars during the Horus Heresy when Horus gave the Fabricator General the protocols to open them. Tainted by chaos and the Abominable Intelligence (A.i) the Stalker Constructs ran rampant over the planet. The Adeptus Mechanicus loyalties were instantly split with some pledging allegiance to the Warmaster Horus. Whilst not formerly known as the Dark Mechanicum, all these disparate groups not aligned with the Omnisiah (Emperor) fell into this category.

Painting Legions Imperialis Serperos ‘Overlord’ Heavy Stalkers

Legions Imperialis is my go to palette cleanser. You know, that model or unit that you can paint in a day or two just to get something done and feel like you’ve achieved something. With this in mind, I really like to keep the paint jobs quick and simple on such small scale miniatures.

I didn’t glue the Heavy Stalker to it’s base when it come to painting and I undercoated the miniature black. The Leadbelcher and Runefang dry brush was all over the complete model. Then I did the hull, pipes and leg base coats by hand. This sped things up because I could do the Nuln Oil step over everything all at once. The it was just a case of highlighting the leg and hull armour and painting the “eye”.

I’ve written a 2800pt army list for Collegia Titanica and it features Dark Mechanicum allies, so watch this space, there will be more Legions Imperialis on the blog soon.
