Remember the Company Veterans I posted before Christmas? With my Shadespire warband finally complete, it was time to return to these guys. Check them out after the jump.
The squad features some existing models which I just upgraded to 32mm bases, and some new additions cobbled together from some existing parts and some new ones. It’s common sense that Space Marine squads come always in fives and with Apothecaries and Standard Bearers now being separate characters, I wanted to add two more models to make up for it.
Amongst them is a limited Games Day model from quite some years ago, as well as the Sergeants from the 4th and 5th Edition starter box. A unit of Sergeants was the look I was going for, not too blinged out so they don’t look like Sternguard. I also decided to go with bare heads for the whole squads for extra heroicness.
Here you can see what models and parts were existing and which pieces are new – note that I also changed the head on the Meltagun bearer on the right.
How do you like them? Tell me in the comments below.

Really nice work mate. I couldn't tell this squad was a rework of an old squad. Your painting is consistent it looks like they were all painted at the same time. Quite shocking when you compare the last picture to the first to see what you actually did. Brilliant.
They look ace, and I know what you mean by "squads come in five", maybe now I have to add three to my 'Command Squad'… more to-do, ho hum 😉
Really love these – there is a fantastic 2nd edition feel to these, versus the almost grittier style that seems to predominate these days.
Would you mind giving a bit of detail as to how you went about painting the chest aquila?
Here is a tutorial for my Ultramarines paint scheme: http://taleofpainters.blogspot.de/2017/04/tutorial-how-to-paint-ultramarines.html
The chest eagles were painted like all the gold areas, basecoat with VGC Glorious Gold (Retributor Armour is pretty close, slightly more yellowish but has a much better coverage), then I painted VGC Brown Ink directly into the recesses, and finally an edge highlight of Warpaints Shining Silver (Runefang Steel / Stormhost Silver).
Thanks. Have always struggled with the Vallejo metallics, even with Garfy’s glaze medium trick. Have you used the metallics from Scalecolor? They absolutely revolutionised my enjoyment of painting metal effects – so smooth and bright.
Brilliant work! I love seeing shot of the swaps you made, there's something very satisfying about the mix of primed, grey plastic, and fully painted parts before the final result!
Loved these so much that I immediately went to ebay and bought myself a Vet Sergeant Aurelius. Never seen this model before and absolutely love it. "some years ago" = 2005. Hope I can do it as much justice as you have!
