New Beginnings in an Old World: Dunk’s new Dwarfs army
Start of July already? WHAT? Where does that time keep going? I know I’m getting old as I say this probably once a week, at least to Garfy and Stahly. I wanted to take a moment to cast your memory back to my article on motivation I shared back in February.
Ork Kommandos, nostalgia, and the dawn of 11th: a retrospective
As the saying goes, “time waits for no man”– or Ork, for that matter. Looking back on my time as a contributor to Tale of Painters, it’s hard to believe my first post was nearly two years ago, back in October 2024. And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition goes up for pre-order this weekend.
Cult of Paint MPO 2026 report: the hobby event done right
Hi folks, I wanted to share my experience of attending the Cult of Paint Miniature Painting Open 2026 as a non-entrant. Right from the off, the standard of painting and sheer creativity on display was astonishing. You’ll find fantastic photos on the artists’ accounts and on Cult of Paint’s socials showcasing the entrants’ work, and I’ve included a few of the shots I took on the day as well.
Showcase: Cadian mobile command tank & Rough Rider Dirt Bike kitbashes
I was super excited to see the releases of the new guard vehicles. I am particularly keen to get hold of the Hippogriff AFV and Centaur RSV vehicles. I have worked hard over the past few years to grow my Cadian Astra Militarum force and paint it up to a reasonable standard. The force was actually inspired by World War II armoured mechanised divisions. So, I’m very much looking forward to expanding it with these new options.
Showcase: Marneus Calgar & Victrix Guard (inc. painting guide)
Hi everyone, I’ve just finished work on the mighty Marneus Calgar and his stalwart Victrix Guard and in this post, I’d like to explain to you the approach and the paints used to paint my Ultramarines.
ToP Tip: How to keep painting when motivation disappears into the Warp
I’ve been painting my Ultramarines for over six months. Blue armour, gold trim, blends, highlights, battle damage… repeat. It’s been rewarding, but somewhere around the twentieth model I hit that familiar wall. The “I know I should paint, but I absolutely cannot face it” wall. We all know it. It’s tougher to crack than Helm’s Deep.
Showcase: Decimator Daemon Engine & Space Wolves Contemptor
Hi folks, I’m back again with some cool models for your viewing pleasure. I’ve always enjoyed the Warhammer 40k Forge World kits, and sadly, with the way things are today, these more specialist and complex kits are far less common and seldom seen on the tabletop. However, I do believe you can still use them as “Legends”, treat them as “counts as”, or, if you’re a filthy heretic like me, you can simply create your own rules (EVIL LAUGH!!!)-
Editorial: 500 Worlds (and the real value of campaign supplements)
Who else is excited for the new 500 Worlds story arc? The hype train left the station for me the moment it was announced. Having started painting my Ultras force last year, this release has landed at the perfect time. For once, I’ve actually lucked out! Im pleased to share with you some finished photos of my take on the mighty Marneus Calgar With Victrix Honour Guard and his Blade Guard Body Guard unit.
Best of: Dunk’s recap of 2025 and hobby resolutions for 2026
As the year comes to an end, it’s nice to look back and reflect on the progress made. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sharing my thoughts on the hobby here on Tale of Painters, along with the models I’ve completed throughout the year. Before I go any further, I’d like to raise a glass to my good friends Garfy and Stahly, who have been so positive and encouraging. I can’t thank you both enough for your friendship and guidance as I continue to develop as a painter. And another cheeky toast to all our readers who have been painting along with us. Cheers to you all!
Showcase: Aeldari Saim-Hann Scorpion & Hornet Grav Tanks
Hi everyone, today, I’d like to share a few thoughts and musings on gaming in general together with some old Forgeworld Aeldari kits the Scorpion Grav Tank and Hornet I painted a while back.
