On today’s post I share my Blood Angels Sanguinor and talk about why I think the new plastic sculpt is better than the old one.

Games Workshop has been refreshing their product lines and rereleasing older designs with new sculpts for years. They recently did this with the Blood Angels, seeing their old metal/Finecast sculpts being replaced with upscaled Primaris sized plastics versions of their characters. One which caused a heated debate online was the Sanguinor.

The original Sanguinor was better…

…but was it though? Well that’s up to you to decide, it’s personal preference afterall. The original is more detailed but he’s so small, and the wings seem so tiny. The original one was also released in metal which was very difficult to work with and then released again in Finecast, a resin notoriously known for having bubbles and holes in it.

The Sanguinor painted by Garfy

The paint job on mine uses real metallics, the original is a far superior and more technical paint job but I’m not comparing paint jobs here, I’m comparing sculpts. The new one is so much more imposing and larger, especially the wings. It’s actually these wings that make the Sanguinor special, in the current range only Astorath and the Sanguinor have wings. They’ve been removed from Sanguinary Guard. It makes the Sanguinor truly stand out.

Plus it’s a plastic kit, which makes it so much easier to work with. I never had the original, so I don’t have any nostalgia for it. I’m happy with my new oversized, angelic, psychic apparition… if anything, I wish he was bigger, maybe Primarch sized. The Blood Angel range is sorely missing a large centre piece model.

How to Paint Blood Angels The Sanguinor

I used my Commander Dante recipe card to paint the Sanguinor but there was one teeny tiny change. For the white wings, I didn’t Nighthaunt Gloom to panel line them, I’ve come to realise it’s a bit too harsh. Instead I used Briar Queen Chill contrast paint and I much prefer it.

What do you think about the latest Sanguinor model? Let me know in the comments.
