This Chaos Space Marine Chosen is the test mini for my new army. I don’t have a ‘black’ army, so thought i’d change my original direction of a force from the Crimson Slaughter and go with a more traditional Black Legion.
This is a very cluttered mini. So much going on, it’s a real mess. I tried to limit the palette by using reds, but different shades. The daemon possessed armour is more a more pinky red, while the loin cloth and pistol holster is starts off with a terracotta. They’re similar enough to not distract.
The base is plasticard and textured paint. Painted up to look old and rusty. I splattered some blood on the base. Expect to see more blood on close combat weapons.
Would people be interested in a Black Legion painting guide?

I think the base will need to stay black what about a light weather around the top of the rim with leadbelcher?
Would love a painting guide. Great scheme
Very nice stuff, Garfy. I'm especially digging the brass/bronze metal and the freehand on the shoulderpads.
How about a light colour for the base rims, such as bleached bone? I think the rim colour doesn't necessarily have to "make sense" with the basing itself (metal plating in thise case), just contrast nicely with both the base and the model's main colours.
Brown isn't going to work considering they're standing on rusted metal plate. I agree black isn't working. But I'm not sure brown will work.
By the way, I would paint the base trims brown (preferably classic Graveyard Earth/Steel Legion Drab style). I don't like black base trims, ok this is my personal taste, but I think it's best for a base to have maximum contrast to the model that is on top, and with black armor and black bases I feel there is too little separation.
Looks amazing & yes to a painting guide, will really help me out with my DV box 🙂
I'm with Kai in that Black Legion normally look too dark, but your style and the red really help make it exciting.
Good question Stahly. Red will be my spot colour on all the models in the force, but to be realistic I'm going to have to paint it different ways. Chosen and Possessed will feature this rich red with light pinky highlights for their daemon flesh. For more standard chaos space marines the red will be a darker terracotta based red and will be painted on clothes, holsters, pouches etc to represent a red worn leather. I will also be adding blood effects to weaponry.
Vehicles will be a harder prospect and will need to think about that.
You might have to be a bit more adventurous with vehicles and add more weathering as spot colours perhaps?
Bare metal and rust streaks and maybe model on more corrupted flesh and protruding bone to tie into the new (old) look they are establishing.
Very nice, really like the reds. You have a way to make them vibrant without looking too orange. Will you feature the reds on all of your models or is it just for the chosen?
Fully assembled. The bolter is tight to the waist so nothing to paint and see behind it.
That's nice. Those sculpts really lend themselves well to Black legion. Did you fully assemble and then paint or paint in parts and assemble?
I really *dig* your colour scheme, the red mutations make him look really creepy and menacing. I've always considered the Black Legion to be an utterly boring colour scheme, but your approach makes them look really badass!
Painting tut would really be nice, as your approach seems… innovative, not just the usual grey edge highlighting.
Great work, and I think it is a no brainer on the tut there mate 😉
Awesome work!
And yes please on the painting tut!
