Update on my Hornet. The hull is almost complete, I just need to paint over the black transfers to blend them into the surface. Prior to applying the transfers, I had an epic varnishing fail that left some patchy areas. I wonder if I’ll ever manage to paint one Eldar vehicle without messing up the airbrush gradients somewhere. Vallejo Game Color Gloss Varnish used to be so good when it had the old VGC label. It seems they changed the formula when they switched to the new generic labels. The consistency is thicker and the varnish is more yellowish. Maybe I just got a bad bottle. Nevertheless, I’ll get out and try some GW ‘Ardcoat this Saturday, so it hopefully won’t happen again.
Next are the weapons and the canopy.

Do you need to thin the varnish to use it in an airbrush?
Yes, you need to thin every paint to use it in an airbrush.
Looks good but those varnish-blotches are tough. Don't think they might go away if you apply another coat?
I have a question regarding how you do the gradients? Do you start with the darkest color and then move on up or do you basecoat the whole thing in a middle-tone first and then apply the shadows and highlights "on top of" the basecoat?
The glossy areas will disappear after two coats of matt varnish, I just do that to protect the edges from rubbing off paint while handling the model. The mentioned patchy areas are actually not visible on the picture above and will be painted over.
For airbrushing, I start with a middle tone basecoat and then apply one layer of shading and two layers of highlights.
Ah! The patchy areas around the transfers are actually from the transfers, the ones you mentioned need blending in! I thought those were the varnish-spots!
