It’s no surprise to regular readers that I love a box set. So when Dark Imperium dropped I had to get it. I’m so happy to be painting Ultramarines again.
I’m a big fan of the 2nd edition Ultramarine Scheme which has some nice bright colours. I was really intrigued to see how it would translate to a Primaris Marine and I was not disappointed!
It’s incredible to see how far the plastic technology has come since those 2nd edition days. It’s also crazy to see the scale creep. These new guys are massive. Even though it’s written into the background they’re supposed to be bigger you can’t help but think this is GW’s way of trying to give people true-scale Marines and address some of the scaling issues (Cadian Guardsmen the height of regular marines?)
So it would seem in the grimdark far future there is only bright colours! Now I really should finish off these Space Wolves before I carry on with the Primaris.

Love seeing your work! The colour scheme you choose for Ultras is one of my favourites and it really stands out above the norm (which sometime I think can be a little drab). And you're right, plastic technology has come such a long way. I really admire GW's new sculpts.
Love them !
You are the proud master (and owner) of true Ultramarines (not these shiny/goldy/black equipment ersatz)
Seeing your wonderful work, i will continue to paint my Ultramarines as i did 15 years ago (yellow/red/blue here i am !) and you succeeded in encouraging me to start my own starter !
Cheers
Awesome work. I know you guys did a tutorial on Ultramarines already, but I really would like to have your receipe for those bright yellow colours you added as shoulder pad trim and on the chest aquila.
I'm using my Imperial Knight Hawkshroud tutorial.
Awesome – only thing it needs is some checker patterns and fire stripes!
Good shout. I did those on my 2nd edition marines. I'll be sure to copy that for the rest of the Primaris models.
1 pointer – consider removing the weird wires from the greaves to the feet that GW uses to hide undercuts. They look totally out of place. I cut them off when practical.
Or paint them up to look like slugs! 😉
Love this pic.
I just started the Death Guard, and feel the same way. The models in this box are just beautiful. I remember when plastics had no detail at all. The 40K starter box now comes with models I would be willing to paint up for a competition!
Really looks great. But why blue instead of the red eye lenses? Und the Helmet of the Lieutenant has a white/ red Stripe on top. 😉
The different forces in my army of the Imperium project share a few design cues. All the power weapons are painted the same way. All the weapon casings are red and I've decided to paint all the lenses the same colour which is blue.
As for the stripe on the helmet, I think it looks goofy so I've left it off. I might add it to the knee pad?
It's totally fine your way. I have just seen the red eyelenses on the other Ultras in this Picture, so I was curious.
I think on the Knee Pad would totally work out. Good Idea! =)
Yeah I need to fix the lenses on some of these older models. Does look daft they don't match.
