Skaven 2024 release wave mega review part 1

Here on Tale of Painters, we’ll be reviewing all the models from the new Skaven wave. Starting with the new Stormvermin, the Acolyte Globadiers, the weapon teams of the Warpspark Weapon Battery, and the new character model, Krittok Foulblade.

A look at the 2024 Stormvermin

The new Stormvermin set includes 10 models, spread across two medium-sized sprues, and they come on 28mm bases. Similar to the new Clanrats, the Stormvermin are more finely detailed without being overloaded, and they feature more dynamic poses. However, apart from the weapon options for the Champion, variety is a bit lacking. The weaponry has been reduced to two-handed halberds, with no shields included. While weapon options are no longer crucial for the streamlined warscroll entries of the 4th Edition, the shield option was quite powerful in Warcry, so it’s a shame it didn’t make it into the sprue.

  • All 10 models are armed with two-handed halberds and are monopose. However, the heads can be freely swapped and positioned if you remove the small pegs. The arm connections at the shoulders are similar, so with some experimentation, alternative combinations might be possible.
  • One specific model can also be built as a Champion. This model gets a unique body half with a back banner, two distinctive head options, two right arms (one with a pistol and one gesturing), a left arm with either a halberd or pick, and a small scenic rock with a rat.
  • One specific model can also be built as a Standard Bearer, with an extra head and a right hand holding a blade.
  • One specific model can also be built as a Drummer.

Plastic Acolyte Globadiers review

The new Acolyte Globadiers box is welcome update to some of the oldest models in the Warhammer range. It contains 5 models on two small sprues, along with 28mm bases.

First, you build five torsos. One model allows you to choose between an arm holding a blade either extended or close to the body, and another offers a choice between a hand dropping or holding a globe. Then, you build five head-and-collar combinations, as well as five gas tanks. These body, head-collar, and gas tank subassemblies can be freely combined, allowing for a lot of variation, even if the poses themselves can’t be changed much. A very neat kit with clever engineering, as it befits Clan Skryre, yes-yes.

Skaven Warpspark Weapon Battery unboxed

A single box of Warpspark Weapon Batteries contains three weapon teams on 60mm oval bases, spread across three small sprues. The kit is cleverly designed and offers plenty of cosmetic options. There are enough parts to field three teams with the same weapons, or you can mix and match as you like. Finally, weapon teams in plastic, and they look great!

Assembly starts with building three shooter-and-loader combinations. Unlike the Jezzails, which I reviewed here in my Skaventide review, the shooters and loaders aren’t freely interchangeable. However, each of the three shooters has two head options, and one specific loader can be replace with a giant rat. Rattical.

Once the three teams are assembled, you move on to the weapons. There are three Warpfire Throwers, three Ratling Guns, and three Warpvolt Scourge muzzles for the shooters (not interchangeable). Additionally, there are three sets of three tank attachments/decorations for the loaders, matching each weapon type. The loader that can be replaced by a giant rat only has a generic tank that fits all three weapon types.

Poisoned Wind Mortars are not included and are probably no longer an option in the new Skaven battletome.

Krittok Foulblade model review

Krittok Foulblade is a wickedly cool new Skaven character model, a commanding presence dominating the battlefield with his minions. As is typical for special characters, the model has no assembly or posing options. The kit includes a small sprue and a 40mm base.

There was some criticism beforehand about the noticeable gaps in Krittok’s cloak. These gaps are indeed there to hide seam lines. However, this is an intentional design element, representing open seams, and can be found on other new Skavne models such as Vizzik Skour’s sashes.

Final Verdict

The new Skaven models are a delight for Skaven collectors and impress with consistently well-executed designs across the board. Considering that Skaven are a horde army, the prices aren’t exactly cheap, especially for the larger models, although they are in line with comparable Age of Sigmar models. However, you can bulk out your core units with the more affordable starter sets and Skaventide.
