Sometimes when you have a game of 40k in the calendar, you just have to buy a big kit with cool rules and paint it to a deadline. That’s how we got to this point, I now have a painted Stormraven that I got to use in my second game. Check out today’s post for more pictures and to find out how she did against Dunk’s Astra Militarum.

Model supplied by my Daughter, for my Birthday.

I love the Stormraven. No, seriously I do! I think it’s such a cool looking model and this is the third time I’ve painted one (Grey Knights and Ultramarines were my previous ones). It is so versatile in the game too with huge movement and a large transport capacity I thought it would be perfect to transport my Terminators around.

When I got the Stormraven for my Birthday recently, it was 240pts, it’s now a whopping 280pts. It’s such a huge points sink, is it really worth it? Well ignoring the game play for a moment, the kit is a load of fun to paint and it’s so rewarding finishing a huge model to add to your army. Sadly, us Blood Angel players aren’t lucky enough to have a primarch model so we lack that ultimate centre piece model, but I think the size of the Stormraven makes a pretty good centre-piece. When the kit was first released, it was unique to Blood Angel players. No one else had it. I guess the Blood Angel Techmarines shared the STC with the rest of the Imperium.

My paint scheme pays homage to those super bright paint jobs of the 1990s that I remember to fondly but with a contemporary application. Lots of blending and glazing create a super soft effect. Because the scheme has its roots in the 90s, I choose not to add any weathering whatsoever. Clean is king! It’s really odd seeing a 40k vehicle that isn’t weathered with grime but I dig it. I’m really happy with how it looks. But how does it do in games?

For this game, I took the Angelic Host detachment, which allows you pick up jump pack units and redeploy them via deepstike. I used this with Dante, his Sanguinary Guard and the Assault Intercessors landing behind enemy lines. Before the game starts you have to declare if the Stormraven is a flyer or in hover mode. I chose flyer which means it has 20+ inch move but can only bank and turn 90º once. You have to plan it’s movement in advance otherwise it’ll fly off the board and you’ll miss out on a round of shooting, it does mean though with 20″+ move I could land right on the flank of Dunk’s army, drop off my Terminators and Death Company Dreadnought, then swing round and fly down his battleline.

I was using the Stromraven to shoot Dunk’s tanks and the Stormstrike Missiles, twin-linked Lascannons and twin-linked Multi-Meltas did a great job of damaging the vehicles. It was the rapid firing Hurricane Bolters that really impressed me though, the sheer number of shots shredded Dunk’s infantry. I can’t wait to take to the skies again now. Next stop, grow the force to 2000pts.

I still have more Blood Angels and I’ll be sharing those Blood Angel units I’ve painted, so bookmark this page and check back every Thursday!
