Hi everyone! I’m a big fan of the Leagues of Votann, so I was thrilled to see the latest reveal from Games Workshop showcasing new Votann models in their Big Summer Warhammer Preview. These fresh additions are a welcome expansion to the existing range, and for me, it’s vital that new models continue to flow into a faction – it keeps things exciting and dynamic.
As a self-confessed paint addict, new miniatures give me the perfect excuse to keep practicing and refining my brush skills. Inspired by the Warhammer Preview reveal, I dug back into my Votann boxes to take stock of what I already have. I’m a veteran hobbyist, an “old man” or “Grey Beard,” as my wife likes to remind me that’s stuck in my ways!

My approach to army painting
Therefore, when I start a new force or army, I usually begin by painting a solid core of troops, like these Hearthkyn Warriors. There are a few reasons for this:
- Troop models often share design elements (shapes, motifs, and styles) that run throughout the faction. As a visual learner, this helps me grasp the aesthetic and decide on my colour scheme and painting approach.
- Troops may not be as thrilling to paint as tanks, monsters, or characters, but they offer a great opportunity to experiment and learn. By painting a lot of them, I refine my technique and build confidence.
- Once the core troops are done, painting the rest of the range becomes much more straightforward. By the time I reach the characters, I’ve practiced my process and can deliver a more efficient result.

What’s Your Approach?
How do you tackle building an army? Do you start with the rank-and-file troops like me, or do you prefer to lead from the front. Painting the main character or centrepiece units first, like any commander worth his salt?

Happy painting and may your brushes flow well!
