Morathi’s warrior-aelves receive deadly reinforcements with two new releases for the Daughters of Khaine. We’re reviewing the Blood Hags, elite warriors clad in heavier armour and wielding lethal polearms, as well as the Shrine of Dark Tribute, the faction’s first terrain piece. In this review, we examine both kits in detail and explore their build options with high-res sprue images.

Alongside the new battletome, the Blood Hags and the Shrine of Dark Tribute, several bundle boxes with older models are being released: the Battleforce: Scáthborn Coven (with Morathi, 5 Khinerai Heartrenders/Lifetakers and 10 Blood Sisters/Stalkers), the Spearhead: Khainite Shadow Coven (with Cauldron of Blood, 9 Khainite Shadowstalkers and 10 Witch Aelves/Sisters of Slaughter), and the Regiment of Renown: The Crimson Lash (1 High Gladiatrix and 10 Witch Aelves/Sisters of Slaughter). Apart from the Spearhead, these boxes only have a single production run and then leave the range, so don’t wait too long here.

Blood Hags review

Blood Hags are a new elite unit of Morathi’s warrior-aelves, more heavily armoured than their Witch Aelves sisters and armed with lethal two-pronged polearms.

The box contains 10 models on two medium-sized sprue segments. Additionally, there are 28mm bases and assembly instructions. The RRP is £37 / €47.50.

All 10 Blood Hags are unique sculpts with no duplicates. Apart from that, the models are all monopose with no build options. Only one of the ten models can optionally be built as a Standard Bearer and has an extra arm (part 68) for this; alternatively, there’s a raised arm with throwing star (67) for the regular Blood Hag. One model is the leader, swinging a two-handed sword above her head. She has no regular build option. There are no interchangeable parts, even the heads/necks all have different contact points. Here and there, a head can be swapped if you fill any potential gaps with Green Stuff.

A few extra heads or cosmetic details would have been nice, at least for the leader. However, you do get 10 individually designed, dynamic poses. And it’s finally another infantry unit for the Daughters of Khaine that doesn’t have physical mutations.

Daughters of Khaine Shrine of Dark Tribute reviewed

The Shrine of Dark Tribute is the first faction terrain piece for the Daughters of Khaine. The box contains a single large sprue and a 130mm round base. As is usual with terrain pieces and Endless Spells, the model is “designed in the UK, made in China”, as the box reveals. The RRP is £42.50 / €55.

The Shrine of Dark Tribute offers 2 build options:

  • To dedicate the Shrine to Morathi, a stone is included showing Morathi’s rune on one side and Krethusa’s rune on the other (part 30). Additionally, there’s a vortex of blood (parts 13 to 17) for the basin.
  • Alternatively, you can dedicate the Shrine to Krethusa the Croneseer. For this, you turn part 30 to the side with Krethusa’s rune and use the smoking coals (part 18) for the basin.

The Shrine of Dark Tribute’s design is heavily inspired by the Cauldron of Blood: two curved staircases that converge in a central platform. Just without wheels. I find the model somewhat overloaded with ideas and details: the attached archway, the many small and large blades, as well as the magical orb that floats beneath the platform. I could have done without one or two of these elements. Added to this, the casting sharpness and level of detail are lower than with regular kits, as is typical with outsourced “made in China” models. Particularly the stone-hewn elements are low in texture and detail, just flat blocks pretty much. Here and there some damage is modelled in, but it looks more melted than crumbled because it’s so smooth.

At approximately 20cm tall, the Shrine is more tall than wide. I find it somewhat unusual that the designers decided to place the Shrine on a regular base. For Endless Spells I think that’s okay, but for terrain pieces it looks somewhat odd in my opinion. The Shrine does stand well without a base. Presumably it’s easier to measure ranges in-game this way.

Final Verdict

The Blood Hags add a much-needed elite infantry option to the Daughters of Khaine roster. The 10 unique sculpts showcase dynamic poses and finally provide non-mutated warrior-aelves, though the complete lack of customization options is disappointing for a premium-priced kit. The Shrine of Dark Tribute feels cluttered with competing design elements, and the outsourced production shows in the softer details and lacking amount of texture.
