The Sylvaneth receive a new spiritual guardian with the Grove Guardian, a matronly spirit who tends the sacred soulpod groves. In this review, we examine this eye-catchin new mini diorama, explore its design and narrative details with high-res sprue images, and assess whether this tender of the groves is worth adding to your Sylvaneth collection.

Grove Guardians are tender, matronly spirits who nurture and protect the soulpod groves of the Sylvaneth. They retrieve dead Sylvaneth spirits back to the Realm of Life, and in-game can heal units and direct prayers to Alarielle to further enhance their healing abilities.

The box contains one Grove Guardian on a 105mm oval base. The model comes on a small two-part sprue, and assembly instructions are also included. The RRP is £44.50 / €57.50 / $73.50.

The Grove Guardian is a monopose model with no build or posing options. You essentially get a mini diorama. Whilst I always appreciate some customisation options in a kit, even without these the Grove Guardian is a spectacular model. The scenic base with the tree growing from the ground, whose branches then transition into the Guardian’s body – that’s truly great artistry. The narrative details, like the treespirit body growing from a large soulpod bloom, are also beautifully captured. The design team is really cooking with the Sylvaneth model range. The recently released Warsong Revenant was already fantastic, and the Grove Guardian raises the bar even higher in my opinion. In that context, you can accept the rather high price for not much plastic.

New Sylvaneth bundle boxes

Recently, Games Workshop has been flooding the market with new bundle boxes for every army release, and the Sylvaneth are no exception. Alongside the new Grove Guardian and battletome, the following are being released: the Battleforce: Strongroot Grove (6 Kurnoth Hunters and 3 Treelords), the Spearhead: Spitewing Flight (1 Arch-Revenant, 5 Gossamid Archers, 6 Spiterider Lancers/Revenant Seekers), and the Regiment of Renown: The Twisted Branch (1 Branchwych and the Warcry Twistweald warband with 8 models). Apart from the Spearhead, these boxes only have a single production run and then leave the range, so don’t wait too long here.

Final Verdict

The Grove Guardian is a triumph of sculpting and narrative design. The way the tree seamlessly transitions into the Guardian's form is genuinely artistic, and the overall composition creates a mini-diorama that demands to be painted and displayed. The Sylvaneth range continues to showcase some of Games Workshop's best design work, and the Grove Guardian raises the bar even higher than the already-excellent Warsong Revenant.
