In this ToP Tip series, I share my best paint recipes on a regular basis. In today’s post, I brought three painting guides for the Craftworld Ulthwé Warp Spiders I painted recently. Learn how to paint crimson red armour, black helmets, wraithbone, and more.
1. Crimson Warp Spiders armour
For the Warp Spiders’ armour, I wanted to give the iconic red a cooler feel and opted for Wazdakka Red, which is a a red with a magenta hue.
Colours used – and their closest matches from the Citadel Colour range in [brackets]:
- Citadel Wazdakka Red
- Two Thin Coats Amphora Red [or Gal Vorbak Red]
- Two Thin Coats Hot Pink [or Pink Horror]
- Vallejo Game Color Squid Pink [or Fulgrim Pink]
If you want to add these colours to your collection, a click on the links will take you to one of our partner shops.
2. Black helmets and orange collars
I painted the black helmets in the classic way with a black base coat and two highlight layers using neutral greys. For the collars with the mandibkes, I wanted a warm tone that would contrast with the cool crimson of the armour. I chose VMC German Orange, a coral orange. Unfortunately, you can’t find an identical shade in the Citadel Colour range, so you’ll need to expand your paint collection if you want to copy this recipe.
Colours used:
- Vallejo Game Color Black [or Abaddon Black]
- Vallejo Game Color Charcoal [or Eshin Grey]
- Citadel Dawnstone
- Valejo Model Color German Orange
- Ionic Smart Colors Light Red
- Citadel Lugganath Orange (apologies, there is a mistake in the graphics, it’s Lugganath Orange, not Fuegan Orange)
- Vallejo Model Color Skin Tone [or Ungor Flesh]
If you want to add these colours to your collection, a click on the links will take you to one of our partner shops.
3. Deathspinner wraithbone and energy effect
The base colour for the wraithbone is Rakarth Flesh, and I’ve been using this recipe since my old Craftworld Iybraesil collection. I painted the pulsing monofilament energy turquoise, and applied the subsequent layers using the stippling technique to create texture and depth.
Colours used – and their closest matches from the Citadel Colour range in [brackets]:
- Citadel Rakarth Flesh
- Two Thinned Coats Scorched Earth [or Dryad Bark]
- Reaper Master Series Polished Bone [or Rakarth Flesh mixed with White Scar]
- Vallejo Game Color Dead White [or White Scar]
- Two Thin Coats Sentient Turquoise [or Sotek Green]
- Vallejo Game Color Turquoise [or Temple Guard Blue]
- Vallejo Game Color Aquamarine [or Baharroth Blue]
- Vallejo Game Color Wolf Grey [or Blue Horror]
