It’s been ages since I last posted, but I’ve finally finished 10 paladins, Draigo and a techmarine for this small Grey Knights force. The client requested them in original black scheme with white lids throughout the force. Today I present to you the standard bearer and Draigo. I post these together largely because they share a similar red hue of cloth either on their banners or loin cloths. I dislike Draigo’s helmet more than I can describe, it’s the worst sculpted lid I’ve ever seen – but that’s one of the (few) disadvantages when painting on commission!
The armour is undercoated with Vallejo black primer pushed through an airbrush. I highlight using the GW system of Fang, Russ, then Fenrisian greys. More after the ju… *CLICK*

I like the overall appearance, but the helmet seems very bright with very little contrast – maybe its just the picture, though.
The blue shading on the helmets does create an eerie ghostly look. I quite like it because these guys are psykers.
I'd like to see some text work on all the scrolls/purity seals. Other then that, lovely work as always.
Really cool, great to see you back with some lovely models.
What didn't you like about Draigo's helmet – was it badly casted?
Lovely models. Did you wet blend the red robe? I would love to achieve such effect.
Dat chu – Yes I did. I began from a black undercoat, and then with khorne red and chaos black open wet blended the shadows leaving the top/raised areas a sort of 50/50 mix. I then blended up through khorne read into a lighter GW red (name escapes me) but it's pretty easy. Use a bigger brush, a size 1 or 2 for the blending bits.
has no one mentioned the gold! wow! it looks wonderfully soft and rich and bright, like its been polished. Im painting grey knights at the moment and would love to get that effect. also i struggle to make black interesting so any help there would be great. cheers guys. stunning stuff as always.
Henry, again its simply the new GW system of 3 pots. I was really using this project to see how the new 3 pot system works! Undercoat black, basecoat balthassar gold, wash with agrax or devlan, then proceed to layer with ghennas and auric. In truth I don't like it that much, preferring a silver sheen to the highlights as of old – but it was interesting to try it out. The auric top coat is a PAIN over big flat surfaces, very poor pigment coverage. Good luck! Rev
Awesome paintjob Rev – these look really cool and different from the standard Grey Knights! Mind sharing with us how you painted the black armour or even better could you if you had the time make us a tutorial please on how you paint these grey knights in a black scheme. It would be really helpful. Thanks 🙂
