In this review, we look at the three new Pro Acryl paint sets. In mid-2024, Monument Hobbies expanded their popular paint range with two new Signature Series Sets, once again in collaboration with well-known painters and content creators. We are treated with six vibrant colours from Louise Sugden of Rogue Hobbies and NMM gold from Flameon Miniatures. The Adepticon team also had the opportunity to put together a paint set.
Pro Acryl Signature Series review
A while ago, I extensively tested the Pro Acryl range and the first four Signature Series sets. You’ll learn all about the general paint properties in my original review, but here’s a brief summary: Pro Acryl is a high-quality acrylic paint with a very pleasant consistency that is easy to work with. It offers rich tones that dry matte, although the screw-top dropper bottles take some getting used to.
Signature Series set 5: Flameon Miniatures
The Flameon Miniatures set has a clear focus: achieving a non-metallic metal gold effect. When you look at the label, you might think that you’re getting a six-step NMM gold palette from light to dark, but that’s misleading. The set includes four warm ochre tones with an orange undertone: Bright Pale Yellow, Bright Yellow Ochre, Orange Brown, and Dark Orange Brown. However, Caramel Brown and Dark Green Brown do not continue this sequence. Caramel Brown is lighter than Dark Orange Brown, and like Dark Green Brown, more muted and slightly greenish.
You can see what I mean in my hand-painted Pro Acryl swatch:
This hand-painted swatch is available in my Patreon shop for a small donation (or by becoming an Autarch tier member). I also have swatches for Vallejo Game & Model Color, Citadel Colour, AK 3rd Gen, Warpaints Fanatic, and Two Thin Coats – all cross-compatible with each other so you can compare colours across different brands. Check out my shop for details.
For me, this suggests two possible gold palettes. Start with Bright Pale Yellow, then Bright Yellow Ochre, Orange Brown, and Dark Orange Brown, then add a warmer dark brown like Dark Golden Brown from the main range for the shadows. Alternatively, you could build your palette around Caramel Brown, mixing it with Bright Pale Yellow to lighten it, and use Dark Green Brown for shading. Having said that, I would have preferred if this set truly provided a cohesive six-step gold palette.
Signature Series 6: Rogue Hobbies
Ex-GW presenter Louise Sugden’s bubbly personality and colourful paint jobs translate into a set with 6 vibrant colours, allowing you to mix a complete colour wheel. There is a Bismuth Yellow, which is actually not a true bismuth yellow. Bismuth is the most opaque yellow pigment but is also highly toxic. Pro Acryl’s Bismuth Yellow doesn’t contain real Bismuth pigment; it merely mimics the hue and has therefore quite weak covering power. The punchy cool yellow closes a gap in the Pro Acryl Range though.
Hot Pink is a vivid pink with good covering power, one of my favourites from the set and brighter than Pro Acryl’s Magenta. PA Ultramarine is a nice true ultramarine blue with good covering power, and both Dark Turquoise and Bright Green impress with vibrancy and covering power. However, my favourite colour is PA Orange Red. While it doesn’t cover as well as PA Bold Pyrrole Red, it’s very warm and vibrant, making other bright reds like Evil Sunz Scarlet or Warpaints Fanatic Pure Red look dull in comparison. You can see this for yourself in my Top 10 video, for which PA Orange Red made the cut:
Among all the new Signature Sets, the Rogue Hobbies Set is my favourite. The colours might be too garish for some people. But it’s nice to have a colour set that focuses entirely on highly saturated colours, as many manufacturers have recently been sacrificing saturation in favour of more opaque pigments to increase covering power.
Adepticon Paint Set
To celebrate this year’s Adepticon 2024, the Adepticon Spray Team was able to put together their own set. There is a new salmon-coloured skin tone that pairs well with the existing PA Shadow Flesh, PA Dark Warm Flesh, and PA Warm Flesh. Additionally, there is PA Orange Oxide, a warm, reddish-brown, and PA Red Oxide, which sits between PA Burnt Sienna and PA Burnt Red. PA Drab Brown, a satin black, and the new dark, slightly greenish metallic tone PA Magnesium complete the set.
I can easily see this set come in handy for weathering old machinery, tanks, and terrain pieces. However, I found the brown and skin tones to be quite similar to existing colours in the Pro Acryl range. I would have preferred PA Orange Oxide to be more orange, as the Pro Acryl range lacks an orange-brown like Skragg Brown from the current Citadel range (or Vermin Brown from the old range).
