Over the past week or so I have been working on this guy. It is the last of the Night Goblin Command Set from Forge World for me to get done. I am always one to save the best for last and this sculpt does not disappoint. Plenty of detail, character and a good scale. The mail draped over the hind quarters of the Squig is worth more than a few drops of drool on its own.
The two empire shields strapped to the Squigs legs and the two plates of armor with flames presented me with a puzzle. What colors and patterns to paint them? I didn’t want any two pieces of the four to be the same colors but repeated the patterns. This keeps him looking different as you move around the model (or so I hope).
I still have plenty left to do but I would love some feedback on what you all think of the face bar on the Squig. I think that is the first time I have ever tried yellow/metal checks and I think the values may be too similar.
I like it very much. Can you tell me wich colours you used for painting the black clothes ? That would be nice. Thank you.
i love it, hope to see more soon
I just noticed your goblin on the GW's site Flickr pool… congratulations!
Yep gotta to agree with both you and Tim that the face bar is looking a little off as the colour balance is a little off the plain bar might work or perhaps try black and yellow with a large degree of rust at the bottom edge of the bar (squig drool is just so damaging for metal just ask any squig herder) or as another alternative which ties him better to the rider black with yellow flames (like the night goblins hood) again lots of drool related rust
Oh man, I "finished" and shot the model last night. Still with the yellow checks. I highlighted the bar which helped distinguish between the yellow and metal more. I also lightened up the Squigs lower lip and gave the mouth and lip a coating of gloss varnish. But with what you and Turtle Tim say maybe I should switch to a plain rusty metal or maybe a black/white bar with dags (triangles) instead of checks. As soon as I get the write up done on the shots of the showcase and uploaded I would love to hear what you both think. If the bar still bugs then I should change it. I thought it was okay now but it might just because I got use to it.
Would love to see the final work, I should point out however that although I make a few suggestions, your skills outstrip mine easily
Great execution! However, I agree with you that the face bar seems a little off. It's the age-old problem of capturing the "randomness" of the goblins with trying to keep a coherent pattern. The front view shows a visual connection between the black/yellow checks on the face bar and one of the shields, which throws off the balance/symmetry with the other shield which is black/white checks. I would suggest muting the face bar and making it the same scheme as the rest of the helmet (plain metal), which would help balance the model and refocus the viewer on the squig's best feature…his TEEF!
Starting to look great! The chainmail is awesome indeed, I reall like how you've painted the horns. I might buy the fw nightgoblin command set somewhere in the future too, the miniatures are fantastic.
Will you post post pictures of the rest of the command group too.
Sure can. I will do a showcase for each in the next week or so. The shaman is a blast to paint.
