Celebrating the Last 12 month’s of hobby output is an annual tradition here at Tale of Painters. I’m going to take a look back through the year and share what I managed to paint and how many of my 2022 hobby resolutions I succeeded in completing. I’ll also share my 2023 resolutions.

Last year I wrote this list for my hobby resolutions:
- 2000pts Warhammer 40,000 army (possibly Black Templars but will see what comes out, Eldar for instance)
- 2000pt Age of Sigmar army (maybe Maggotkin of Nurgle)
- Tzeentch Daemon Warcry Warband
- Cursed City Expansions
So how did I do? Well I did collect a new 40K army, it was the Leagues of Votann and I managed 1525pts of them. I also painted 1500pts of Maggotkin of Nurgle, maybe a bit more if I ally the Slaves to Darkness Cultist warbands I painted for Warcry. I didn’t start my Tzeentch Warcry Warband, But I did paint 5 other Warcry warbands! Cursed City expansions never included any miniatures, but I did paint the Abhorrant Ghoul King which we all know was destined for Cursed City. So overall, didn’t exactly hit my resolutions, but I wasn’t far off.

January
I started the year, getting some 40k characters and a couple of issues of Imperium magazine from Games Workshop and Hatchette for review. I painted some as Black Templars, the Librarian I painted as a Blood Angel. The Tau were a fun change of pace and I also managed to paint a base of Nurglings as a colour test piece.

February
This month was tough for me. I had some health issues that I thought were stress related but turned out I had an intolerance to a food stuff. Before I found out it was dietary, I was trying to remove stress from my life so I cancelled my partnership with Hatchette partworks and asked Games Workshop to remove me from their content creators programme. Moving forwards I just painted random single miniatures like a Necron, some Black Legion, Dark Angels and I made a good start with a Maggotkin of Nurgle Warcry warband. I was painting so many different things I had no direction.

March
I continued to randomly paint single models for most of my collections and was starting to complete a squad of Hellblasters, Obliterators, Greater Possessed. I continued to add to my Maggotkin with 5 Plaguebearers and I started painting the Sepulchral Guard Underworlds warband. I was settling into my hobby again without having to worry about NDAs and deadlines.

April
Black Templars, Magottkin got a few more reinforcements as I continue to slowly paint one model at a time. I also finished painting the Sepulchral Guard. I felt content working through my backlog of miniatures still.

May
Now, when I saw this Masters of the Universe Battleground game announced by Archon Studios, I was in a really good place. My health issues were being managed, my mental health was in a good place and my hobby was stress free and thriving. So I reached out to Archon Studios to ask if they wanted to do a partnership. They send me a copy and I’ll paint it, make tutorials and take some fancy pictures like the one below. I had an absolute blast working on this set.

June
Games Workshop reached out to me during this month to work together on a one-off article for the Ridge Hauler and Trailer. The article came out great and you can see it here. With the article complete I went back to my Maggotkin of Nurgle and painted a Blood Angel Intercessor for a painting tutorial.

July
I started July painting a Greater Daemon of Slaanesh, the Keeper of Secrets and a couple of Stormcast characters. I was back to painting my models again, then I saw the Heart of Ghur Warcry set and I reached out to Games Workshop for a copy to paint up and take some stunning photos of. This Gnarloak terrain set is evocative and gorgeous. I love the creativity in Warcry.

August
Games Workshop were kind enough to follow up the Heart of Ghur set with some more Warcry models and I painted the Chaos Legionnaires. I also got to paint Drekki Flynt who featured in another Warhammer Community article. They cropped the photo for the article, so you can see the original here.

September
During September I managed to get my hands on a copy of the Leagues of Votann army launch set. Yellow is my favourite colour, so I thought I’d paint them with that. They’re great models and I was happy with how they turned out.

October
During October, Games Workshop followed the army launch set up up by sending me the next wave of Leagues of Votann models. I didn’t get them all painted but I was happy with the 4 units I did paint. Turns out I’d painted 1500pts in two months. Can’t complain with that.

November
This month was amazing, my good friend Dunk (go follow his Insta) kindly gifted me a Great Unclean One and I lavished 3 whole weeks just on this model alone. It’s easily my favourite model I’ve ever painted. The rest of the month I managed to squeeze in a Goff Rocker, Chaos Chosen and started the Sundered Fate Warcry Terrain.

December
Here we are at the end of the year and my monthly goal here was to paint rest of the Warcry Sundered Fate box set and I failed by 5 models. Games Workshop sent me the Ghoul King and I couldn’t resist painting him up so I’m blaming that model on me not finishing the set.

2023 Resolution
I think in the 11 years I’ve been doing these recap and resolution posts I’ve never ever stuck to a hobby resolution and completed it and there’s a reason! I don’t know what Games Workshop’s release schedule is and there is always something new and exciting that comes out and scuppers my plans. Oh well, here’s what I want to get done:
- Paint a Slaves to Darkness Legion of the First Prince army.
- Paint a Disciples of Tzeentch army.
- Paint the next two Warcry Boxsets
This post marks my 11th annual recap post. Find my previous resolutions for 2021 here, 2020 here, 2019 here, 2018 here, 2017 here, 2016 here, from 2015 here, from 2014 here, from 2013 here and from 2012 here.
Incredible mate. More in one year than most paint in a hobby life time. I have said it before and I have to say it again. It’s not just volume here. The quality of each model is first class. Each one has so much attention to detail and care put into it. I have really enjoyed following your work this year, all the articles, guides, photography and reviews. I am very much looking forward to seeing what you do in 2023!
Cheers mate, and thank you for all the support and encouragement you give me. You’e a legend! Here’s to 2023, more photography, gaming and painting together!
