Skaven 2024 release wave mega review part 3

Here on Tale of Painters, we’ll be reviewing all the models from the new Skaven wave. Click here for part 1, which covers the new Stormvermin, Acolyte Globadiers, Warpspark Weapon Battery, and Krittok Foulblade. In part 2, we covered the Warp-Grinder, Doom-Flayers, Arch Warlock and Warlock Galvaneer, click here to read.

In this post, we cover the remaining models from this year’s Skaven release: Clan Moulder’s Brood Terror and Master Moulder, plus the new rat daemon centrepiece model, Vizzik Skour.

Skaven Brood Terror unboxed

The Skaven Brood Terror is a new Clan Moulder creation that closes the size gap between Stormfiends and Hellpit Abominations. The model comes on “only” three small sprues, but it is quite large, the model is placed on a 90mm base.

As you might notice from the sprue images, this model is a monopose push-fit model that doesn’t require glue. For some reason, Games Workshop doesn’t seem to use the “Easy to Build” label anymore, but this is what the Brood Terror is. This also means that there are no assembly or posing options, nor additional bitz. That’s unfortunate, as the model is so cool that I’m sure many collectors would want multiples of it.

Plastic Master Moulder review

The Master Moulders from Clan Moulder are getting their first standalone model (the current Finecast model originally appeared as the Skwee Gnawtooth for Warhammer Fantasy), and in plastic to boot. The clampack contains a small clampack-sized moulded frame and a 32mm base. The Master Moulder is a monopose model without options, but thanks to its body horror elements it looks fantastic (in a disturbing way) and fits in very well with Brood Terror.

A look at Vizzik Skour, Prophet of the Horned Rat

When Kragnos’ primal energy broke free in Ghur, a daemon of ruin arose in Blight City. The Great Horned Rat shaped it into Vizzik Skour, Lord of the Gnaw and Prophet of the Horned Rat.

This massive new Skaven centrepiece model stands on a 130mm base and includes one large and one medium sprue. Unfortunately, there are no alternative parts or posing options, but it does come with six small rats for your bitz box, which you can place freely on the base.

The design is truly spectacular. The old Verminlord kit from Warhammer Fantasy’s The End Times was impressive, but Vizzik Skour showcases how much Games Workshop’s miniature design has evolved since then. The anatomy looks more realistic (as far as a rat daemon can), the textures and fur are finer, and the folds in his rags and sashes are more skilfully wrought. While the old Verminlord appeared dynamic and light, Vizzik exudes weight and gravitas. He is also larger, with a height of approx. 17cm he is almost Imperial Knight size, though a lot of his height comes from his staff and horns.

The only potentially contentious element might be the open seams in his clothing and sashes, similar to Krittok Foulblade, used to hide seam lines.

Final Verdict

The new Skaven models are a delight for Skaven collectors and impress with consistently well-executed designs across the board. Considering that Skaven are a horde army, the prices aren’t exactly cheap, although they are in line with comparable Age of Sigmar models. However, you can bulk out your core units with the more affordable starter sets and Skaventide.
