On today’s post we take a look at the Legion Spartan assault tanks for Legions Imperialis. There is also an updated painting guide and for the first time on the blog, my entire 3455pt army photo! Don’t miss it.

The Spartan is a transport option in games of Legions Imperialis. You can take them as dedicated transports, or a slot in your formation. I’ve chosen to add them as a Transport slot for my Demi-company because I haven’t got any spare models to put them in, all my infantry have dedicated Rhino transports.

The Spartan is 1″ slower than a Rhino and moves 8″. However, it’s way more resilient with a 2+ save and 2 wounds. It also features some firepower options with quad lascannons or laser destroyers as well as hull mounted heavy bolters or lascannons. You can even take a pintle mounted multi-melta.
All this comes at a premium though at 80pts each! That’s 8x the cost of the humble rhino. It will carry 5 bases of infantry, but 8 rhinos will carry 16 bases of infantry! Of course, a rhino can’t carry terminators, so the Spartan is a better solution for that.

I really wish you could get a company of terminators on a single sprue. At the moment you get 2 bases of terminators in an infantry box (£30) I would love to put more terminators in my Spartans but it’s just not financially viable.
How to Paint Iron Warriors

I’ve been painting Iron Warriors for about a year now and my paint recipe has changed a little. I’ve updated my recipe card with the new additional steps. Most notable addition is I’ve remembered to add rusty tracks to the guide. It also includes the undercoat colour and a couple more new steps like an Agrax wash and some new highlights.

Here it is, my entire painted collection. This is a fully legal playable army. Each quarter of the pic is a formation. Top left is Armoured Company. Top right is Demi-company. Bottom left is Legion Garrison Force and bottom right is Legion Heavy Assault Spearhead. The two Warhound Titans are painted in Kryptos colours which were situated on Tallarn when the Iron Warriors were. It’s a very thematic force, lots of armour, lots of terminators all ready to roll up on Loyalists and lay siege to their fortifications.
That’s it for my Legions Imperialis project for now. I do want to add a Dire Wolf Heavy Scout Titan (or two) but that can wait.
Awesome painting Garfy!
Regarding your Iron Warriors paint recipe, for the rusty tank tracks, You mentioned “gore grunta fur wash”. Is that a “straight from the pot” application or a mix of lhamia/contrast medium?
Thank you!
Keep up the good work!
Cheers
I use to paint it straight from the post, but now I thin it a little with contrast medium. I think it looks a little better with more of the previous metal layer showing through.
incredible mate! brilliantly done
