Today I’m giving you a look at the first half of my Despoiler Squadron that I’m currently working on. These are MkIII models that I’ve customised with some Sons of Horus bitz and melee weapons. More on that in this post.

After the (obviously totally fake 😉 leak of the Saturnine box, I’m seriously hyped and checking HorusHearsay.com daily. I’ve already painted some heavy hitters like the Kratos, Land Raider Proteus, and more recently Horus Ascended – but I’m still missing infantry. So it was high time to fix that for the new edition of The Horus Heresy.

I love the new MkIII Legionaries (you’ll find a review and scale comparison here) and think they’re a bold reimagining of the classic Iron Armour. I wanted to go all-in on the Sons of Horus theme, so I picked up the head upgrades and a few weapons from the Sons of Horus armoury, like the Carsoran power tabar. The banner, representing a Legion Vexilla, comes from Vheren Ashurhaddon. I’ve kitbashed the model to create a Sergeant in artificer armour, which I’ll show you in the next post.

For the paint job, I’m following my own Sons of Horus tutorial, which you can find here. However, I painted the left arm and helmets black, inspired by an artwork showing a Sons of Horus Inductii.

The squad will eventually be ten Legionaries strong, to ride in my Land Raider Proteus alongside a Praetor or character model. I’ll show you the second half of the Despoiler squadron next time – maybe we’ll even have more info on the Saturnine box by then!
