Hi there, in this post I want to present you proper pictures of my Raider of the kabal of the Last Hatred I painted last month. What made this model special is that it is the first airbrushed model of mine. Even though I need more practice, I’m quite satisfied with the result. The airbrushing also helped to keep the painting time low, always a plus because I hate models that take forever to finish. Find out how I used my airbrush on this model and take a look at more angles of the Raider after the jump.
For the hull I sprayed on a mix of black and Naggaroth Night, then I airbrushed some highlights with VGC Hexed Lichen. To tone the gradient down, I applied a filter with Army Painter Dark Tone Ink (Badab Black) straight from the bottle with no thinner added. Finally I applied sharps highlights with the same mix I use on my infantry models: Hexed Lichen and P3 Carnal Pink.
The undercarriage was drybrushed with Mechanicus Standard Grey and then Administratum Grey and finally washed with Dark Tone Ink. Otherwise, the model is painted with exactly the same techniques as pointed out in my Kabalite Warriors tutorial. The green glow on the dark lance is painted exactly the same way as the eyes in my glowing eyes tutorial.
What do you think off this model? This won’t be the last Raider for my Dark Eldar… where could I improve?
Ooh, I really like your subtle airbrushed highlights! I'm planning to do something quite similar with my Saim-Hann reboot as soon as I have the new Eldar 'dex and models in my hands… Next month would be nice *fingers crossed*.
This is really nice work i love it keep the good job

I'm not personally a big fan of just edge highlighting. It's great as a final touch after some nice blending and gradiations in tone, but just to give something an extra touch of definition and imply light glinting off a hard edge. By itself, I dunno. Sounds like I'm in the minority here though. Most people seem to like it, and even the Eavy Metal studio crew seem to have decided that skipping all the blending and highlighting and shading and going straight to the edge highlights suits Dark Eldar just fine. Sorry… no offence, just personal opinion. I do love your colour choices and the cleanliness and precision of your painting though.
Kelly, I think it can work, if there is some color modulation on it. It's a different style. IMO this piece is done in an old-school style. The edge highlights and the sigil are what make it old school for me.
This is really lovely work. I especially like the treatment you've done on the sails. What's really striking is how NEAT and tidy your edges are! Did you hand paint those? So straight and no mess, looks fantastic.
Pretty cool!
There are a couple areas that could be improved but for an army – this is WAY above tabletop quality. Your army is going to look fantastic.
I don't know if you're interested in constructive criticism – I am. I love to give it and accept it. So if you are like me, read on.
1) there are some gaps/mold lines on the dark lance turret shield that could have been filled better.
2) The edge highlighting – at least in these pictures – is a little too uniform. I'm not one who like every edge to be highlighted but when it is done, I think there should be a little color modulation on the lines. For example, the armor plates along the hull of the vehicle look a little odd because the edges all have the same hue. Perhaps some lighter hues at the top edges and dark ones at the bottom edges would do you better.
I guess what this means is more work – when you've already put hours upon hours into it. Like I said, this model is fantastic, but even fantastic pieces can use some adjustment.
Great work 🙂
I really admire your steady hand…
