Another Tyranid from what feels like many years ago. Who now lives in Kansas of all places with his new owner, and I’m sure he is enjoying it:). I love this model, sure its a pain to transport, but the I think GW did a really good job with designing him. Game wise I’m not sure as usually I tend to kill it pretty quick always when playing against my wife. Which shes not to keen on 🙂 Go Go Plague marines….Anyone play Tyranids? How do you think the codex fairs up in 6th edition rules?

Against any competitive player, tyranids just fold. In 6th, Flying Monstrous creatures are a joke. They are all over priced and far to easy to kill. People think that needing a 6 to hit is survivable but when nearly everything can wound them and there is so much that they won't get a save from. Not to mention their biggest enemy is the grounding test. Overall, the bugs are still way to overpriced. T6 is not survivable yet most of the big bugs are costed so close to a landraider. 3+ saves don't save space marines and they won't save the 200+ point MCs either.
Most of the Tyranid lists you see are almost always the same. Tervigons, hive guard, doom, and flying monstrous creatures. It's boring how few options Tyranids have that can be "competitive".
My biggest praise for the new Hive Tyrant model is how they were able to add the wing components without hardly any change to the original metal model, so those wings perfectly on my existing Tyrant.
Re: nids in 6th just this weekend I answered a call from a stranger to join him at the pairs tournament at Warhammer World. We took nids and not a list I would describe as 100% competitive, maybe 75-80%
1 Winged Hive Tyrant, 3 Tervigons, 2 Hive Guard, a Trygon, 10 Devgaunts, 11 Vanilla Termagants, the DOOM! in a pod [obviously] and a Bastion.
We came 2nd out of 68 pairs! Not bad for a force made up in a couple of nights and two players unaccustomed to each other.
However, the recent Throne of Skulls I think saw 2 out of the top 3 most popular armies were Xenos – Tau [on the back of the new Codex] and Tyranids! That and another [possibly Astartes based] Codex had 7 competitors each and the Army with the highest points ratio was… Tyranids!
At this rate I don't want a new Codex! I'm convinced the Doom will be binned off. I'd like them to fix a couple of things – Tyranid Prime in a Spore Pod with a Squad of Warriors – Rippers [anything to make them viable] – Hormagaunts [anything to make them viable] I can live with Genestealers as they are but think they could do with a 4+ save perhaps, Broodlord – re-roll on the Psychii power charts. I just don't get this FAQ there's no reasoning to it, if he rolls a lvl 2 power he gets to re-roll because he can't manifest 2 Warp Charge so why not reroll a witchfire spell because he can't use his BS 0 stat line. This ruling only affects us and seems as if we're being singled out for no reason.
Perhaps a reconsideration of allies – doesn't bother me but if we could open up a 2nd FOC for our own Codex that would help in sub-2000pt limitations.
Fortifications – something we can fire at flyers! Although I'll continue making my own Nid equivalents, its cheaper and more fun!
I think the biggest problem with Tyranids in 6th Edition is the lack of Frag Grenades. Assaulting units and going second hurts your fragile troops. On top of that the enemy can fire overwatch at you. Tyranids have completely lost their edge as a close combat army.
Fantastic painting. I'm a huge Tyranid fan and this Tyrant makes me happy 😀
This Hive Tyrant is crazy good i love the sharp contrast of the stoney white and the black, fantastic work! If you would like to have your work featured on http://www.ttcombat.com then please don't hesitate to contact me at info@ttcombat.com
I think Tyranids did quite well out of the 6th Edition Rules really. There are certain "must have" units, at least from my perspective. First and Foremost of these is the Tervigon. My 1850 list is based around them and includes 3 Tervigons (2 Troops and 1 HQ), The Swarmlord with 2 Tyrant Guard, and 2 units of 3 Hive Guard. Overall I would definitely say the T6 things are the way forward for a tyranid army. Supported by an ever expanding scuttling horde thanks to the Tervigons. Brilliant Paintjob BTW!
