Bring out the trumpets and start the fanfare! Garfy has finished the Ultramarine Tactical Squad. I’m really happy with the finished squad. This now completes all the marines in the Second Edition boxed game. I’ll have to start the Orks and Grots soon. Close ups and a group shot of all twenty after the jump.
I like to break my combat squads down the classic way. Four meat shields… sorry Marines with bolters and a missile launcher in one squad.
The sergeant and flamethrower are then backed up by the last three bolter marines.
Here’s the group shot of all twenty marines from the box set. I’m really proud to have the marines finished. Young Garfy never managed to complete the set back in 1994. Lets see if old Garfy can do it.

Thanks a lot, we appreciate any help to continue and grow Tale of Painters 🙂
I would love to see you paint the new tactical marine squad in this scheme!
So, am i the youngest painter on this site? Im only 15.9 years old. I teach poeple how to piant, im am good enough to join the Eavy meatal team… not to brag or anything
Send us pictures via our Facebook page and I'll put them up. You've set yourself a pretty high bar. I look forward to seeing them.
I have to say I love this work! There is something very appealing about taking old simple miniatures but painting them up with a top-notch paint job.
I have 20 of these guys too that friends gave me many years ago as an attempt to coerce me in to playing 40K (I already had a huge WFB Empire Army). Over the years, I'd use these squads to fill in troops when I needed an additional Tactical Squad, etc., and they always stayed at that "partially painted" stage. Recently, we started playing 40K in a big way again, and I adjusted my army and tactics to use a big "foot-slogging" army, which required more Tactical Squads, etc.!
As such, it bothered me that I kept putting them on the board with incomplete paint jobs, so I sat down and made a committed attempt to finish up the Sergeant, Flamer, and Missile Launcher models. Looking for inspiration and examples of painted Ultramarines, I came across your blog here, and immediately thought: “This is awesome! This guy is doing the same thing I wanted to do!”
So, you’ve inspired me to go for it and finish up all 20 marines to a top-notch level of quality. Thanks for the motivation!
Hi Gordon, I'm happy you stumbled across tale of painters, but i'm really pleased you got in contact. So many people lurk! You HAVE to send me pictures of your old hammer tac squad. Get in contact via our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/taleofpainters
Good luck.

These look just fantastic! Very jealous.
Pf… 1994, That was like 20 years ago… I feel old but it still tingles when I think about Mystic Quest, Zelda and the unboxing of my very own 40k 2nd edition set…
Looking good garfy.
Bit cheeky perhaps so I won't link this but seemed a good place to mention that I've a copy of the 2nd ed boxed set complete on eBay ATM. If anyone is interested please feel free to take a look. Would be good to see it go to someone who'll make the most of it. ☺
That's really respectful of you stokie_rich. Please feel free to chuck a link up in the comments. I'll post it up on the Facebook page as well for you dude.
Smashing Garfy that'd be really appreciated, the link is:

Really nice looking ultramarines, im looking forward to seeing how you handle all those grots. I remember adding to my force back in the day with the metal gretchin and ghazghull thraka. Never did get round to picking up one of the metal ork dreads had to make do with the cardboard one 🙂
have you considered doing a battle report using the contents of the old box. It would be cool seeing your feedback on the old rules!
I can find someone willing to learn (or relearn) 2nd edition with me then I'll gladly post a battle report. Won't be for a while yet. The next 60 models are going to take some time!
Great panting Garfy, gotta love some good old ultramarines!!
I wasn't quite certain way to post this but there was an Imperial Knight Showcase, by ThirdEyeNuke, that appeared in my blogger list and hasn't appeared on this blog.
Hi Crodon. It really isn't anything exciting. TEN was writing his post and accidentally posted it instead of scheduling it for another day. As soon as he realised he deleted it and asked me to remove it for Facebook.
Cool, OK I will be looking forward to it. I can imagine how easily it can be done.
Keep up all the good work here, to all painters!
Thanks dude.
Yeah, because there are six of us on the blog and we all finish our models at random times we schedule our posts in advance so we can guarantee that every day we can bring you guys at least one post. We haven't missed a day yet in over two years! We also try to make sure the same painter doesn't post two days in a row, although I'm usually guilty of that if I've done a review or tutorial on a Saturday, so there are exceptions.
Sweet. I just picked up a 5 man squad from the space crusade game. I 'll be referencing these posts frequently when i get around to painting them!
Nice work Garfy. I think Young Garfy would be proud of the models and how they painted up nicely!
Nicely done !
How did you do the yellow ?
