The Black Legion continue to gather support with the addition of a Rhino. I need a Rhino for my foot slogging Chosen who are failing to make an impact on the game. Read on to discover how I possessed this machine’s spirit.
The most striking thing about this work in progress shot is the freehand. I’ve carefully painted these by hand. They took three nights to complete (5 to 6 hours). I didn’t mask them off and airbrush them because I wanted them to be so precise and crisp. I think it worked.
I quite like airbrushing the main armour of Rhinos. They’re really angular and by using the straight edge of a piece of card you can mask off areas and get nice highlights on the edges. I’ve used Eshin Grey and Dawnstone to highlight the tank. Stahly warned me about airbrushing tanks saying that they can look too highlighted and I agree with him. But the use of Abaddon Black through the airbrush to give the tank a light misting tones down the highlighting a lot. For more information on airbrushing tanks I have this in-depth tutorial.
I thought this was a neat idea. I’d paint all the screens as the Eye of Horus. I like the idea that the machine is possessed.
I want to add two meltaguns to my squad of Chosen so I can shoot from the top hatch. I’ve also given the Rhino a combi-melta. This should really help as an anti tank unit. The Rhino will also have a Dirgecaster which will help my small unit not get shot to pieces by overwatch.
Holy shit, this is amazing. The screens are a brilliant idea and I love those freehand icons. That's some serious skill.
thanks forlinkinng your uktramirine tutorial… but painting black is an altogether different beast!? have you any tips particular with dealing with black??
Blacks easier. You only have to highlight up and then mist. The ultramarine tutorial I shared was just to give insight into the misting.
The interesting thing with black is you can highlight it with different colours and different techniques to give different blacks.
Sharp white highlights will give the impressing of a really reflective gloss black.
Dull flat greys will give the impression of a matt surface that doesn't bounce light around.
Grey blues will give a deep rich black .
And of course highlighting black with reds and oranges will give the impression the black is near fire or warmth (OSL).
OSL or object source lighting is effectively painting coloured highlights, because all highlights are is the way light reflects off a substance.
I apologise if I'm teaching you to suck eggs. You're accomplished painter in your own right.
I really like the inside detail. Cool stuff.
I love the screens, the airbrushing and the freehand designs. Really top-notch stuff. The sad thing about Rhinos is the design of the kit nearly always means there are visible gap lines on them. Not such a big deal, as this is a gaming fig. I am still pretty amazed at all the freehand. How did you get such a bright yellow over a black undercoat? Curious as my Dark Eldar have yellow designs over black and I'm looking for other ways to do it.
Around 4 coats of watered down ceramite white was laid before I could do the three coats of watered down yellow. No tricks. No shortcuts. Just time consuming technique.
Gotcha. I do a bunch of coats of Iyanden Darksun, which is an older foundation paint, so not sure what the new incarnation is. I'll try using white next time – yep, there are no shortcuts to this…and you have to let the coats dry before applying a new one. Trick with painting is sometimes patience.
That freehand is amazing and those screens are such a cool idea!
