I made some good progress on the hull. Vallejo Surface Primer black was applied with my airbrush for a smooth and matt basecoat of black, then I drybrushed the edges with Mechanicum Standard Grey and Administratum Grey. Finally I used a sponge to apply chippings of Army Painter Gun Metal and Shining Silver (Leadbelcher and Runefang Steel). Overall, pretty simple and quick to do, which allows me to spend more time on the details.
As you can see, I removed the details of the front hatch and used plasticard and an icon from the Baal Predator sprue to create a matching design for the Death Company Rhino doors I’ll be adding later. What do you think?

Stahly hails from Craftworld Germany and has been involved with Warhammer since childhood. He has painted several armies and countless warbands and Kill Teams over the decades, and founded Tale of Painters in 2011. When he's not painting miniatures incredibly slowly, he's testing the latest paints, tools and kits with German precision and a no non-sense attitude.
I think this looks great so far. The chipping works perfect IMO. Also nice touch with the plasticard and Baal upgrade to the front. Always been a fan of Death Company so I can't wait to see this completed.
Great work so far! Looking forward to seeing the finished product 🙂
I've seen someone actually highlight metallics on top of black! This is similar but with a sponge in controlled areas. great affect =)
I, too, like the chipping effect. Would it be possible for one of you guys to do a video tutorial showing some of these techniques and how you use them. Cheers!
If you check out Thirdeyenukes tutorial on the Astra Militarum Wyvern you will see how to do weathering alot better than this.
This is more like tabletop weathering.
Personally I like how it has been done. It suits the paint job. As work in progress it looks stunning so far.
Love the sponging/weathering. Great work mate.
Your sponging looks pretty bad tbh.
I have had success with a sponge by using dark browns followed by a highlight colour and then metal added with a brush.
I also find that glazes of sepia wash and an oil of the armours colour on top of the chipping helps it blend into the surface.
I know you didnt ask for tips but im not allowed to just say I dont like it.
Have to be constructive.
love the front hatch work.
looking forward to seeing it completed
