Hey guys, Lecoqadoodledo here with a recent project. I and several others were asked to paint up a Primaris Marine each for our local store, in various schemes to show off the new sculpt. I decided on Blood Ravens because I’ve always liked the colour palette but never had the chance to try it out. Overall I kept each colour straightforward as I only had a few days to paint it. I aimed for just a real clean paint job, and I’m pretty happy with how it came out.
The Chapter symbol was the one aspect I was worried about, as symmetrical symbols are generally the hardest thing for me to paint. I made a minor change to the way the ravens’ wings are done, just so that it would fill more of the shoulder pads space.
I’ve always liked painting deep reds such as this. It starts with a basecoat of Khorne Red, a recess wash of Agrax Earthshade, and then edge highlights of Evil Sunz Scarlet, followed by Wild Rider Red. I also learnt, not to varnish models before taking pictures, as my current lighting does weird things to the finish.
Hope you’ve all liked it, I’m a big fan of these new marines (despite them needing way more highlighting), and can’t wait to get my hands on more!

I was wondering if you would be willing to tell me how you painted the reds?

I understand why some people dislike the Blood Ravens:
Creating an all-new Space Marine Chapter for the DAWN OF WAR videogames, the developer, RELIC, seemed to combine names of classic Chapters into something generic.
However, once you learn about their secret heritage…
*cough* heretics *cough*
It makes perfect sense that the Blood Ravens would seek to conceal themselves as successors of the Blood Angels / Raven Guard legions.
*cough* so many librarians *cough*
Making them unique in the canon!
I always wanted to try BR's myself, but I am scared of the chapter symbol.
Any chance on a small tutorial for it? I know there is already one online but yours looks really nice.
Anyways thanks for sharing this.
The chapter symbol is definitely what stops me doing several of these guys.
The trick for me was sketching in the silhouette of the symbol with Zandri Dust so that it's easier to touch up, and then filling it in.
When doing the silhouette, you want to paint several lines in to establish the overall shape. So, a line from beak to tail and a line from one wing tip to the other and then work your way out from the lines, touching up when you need to. Only once you're happy with the shape do you go in with the black and colour it.
Thanks!
So good – would you mind explaining how you achieved the rest of the scheme such as the bone, black and silver?
Sure, all were quite straightforward.
Black:
Basecoat Abaddon Black followed by highlights of Mechanicus Standard Grey, Dawnstone and Administratum Grey.
Bone:
Basecoat Zandri Dust
Recess wash Agrax Earthshade
Layer Ushabti Bone
Highlight Screaming Skull
Silver:
Basecoat Leadbelcher
Wash Nuln Oil Gloss
Highlight Stormhost Silver
Thank you so much!
I have been playing DoW3 and am in the mood to paint some blood ravens!
love it when the other chapters get some paint! Gonna do mine up as scars vs deathguard. the old enmity for a new era!
Pretty cool! Was this the single sprue Primaris model?
Yeah, they're great for test pieces and the base is so fun to paint.
I have a few so I'll be doing another one soon as Scythes of the Emperor.
