In today’s post, we’re venturing back into the ruins of Hive Secundus to investigate reports of hivers kidnapping unsuspecting gangers and taking them into the deepest depths, only to be seen weeks later without hair and a sickly complexion. Check out this article for Brood Scum Painting guide and detailed photography.

Brood Scum on the prowl for fresh initiates to join their growing commune.

The Brood Scum models, are actually Hive Scum models. It’s a sprue of 4 basic gangers. What makes them Brood Scum are the malformed human heads that come included on the Malstrain Genestealer Sprue. It’s a simple idea and feels very 1990s Games workshop, repurposing an existing kit with an upgrade sprue and I’m here for it.

I’ve never painted any Genestealer Cult models before so I didn’t really know what kind of scheme I wanted to paint them. I guess the the first thing I actually decided upon was the colour saturation. I hadn’t even picked the colours but I knew I wanted them desaturated. This is hard for me, because my default is bright and colourful. As I had already painted the Malstrain Genestealers, I just thought I’d lean into their sickly yellow colour and paint a fabric version of that, almost as if the Brood Scum are trying to emulate their Alien overlords. Using this idea, I added some brown to the scheme. The pale purple fabric was chosen because it’s the complimentary colour to yellow.

With plenty of colours now in the scheme, I kept the rest of the model areas as different shades of grey/black or metal, these neutral tones help break up areas without actually adding more conflicting colours. With so much going on, I actually think they work quite nicely with the purple and yellow areas catching your eye.

How to Paint Brood Scum

With the models undercoated black, start by dry brushing the model with Leadbelcher then a light dry brush of Stormhost Silver then stop painting the metals. Check out the rest of the recipe, the metal, ribbed armour, boots, belt straps, shoulder pads, padded vests and trousers all have the same second step of Agrax Earthshade. So you’ll want to lay down all the base coats for those areas before hitting the entire model with an Agrax Earthshade wash. It’s a huge timesaver. Then you can choose to either carry with the other base coats for dark brown leather, purple fabrics, light skin and dark skin, or go back and do the highlighting for all the areas you just washed, it’s up to you.

My first NecromundaΒ piece for Warhammer Community featured a Ridgehauler being chased by Outrider Quads.Β

Check back soon, when I’ll share how I made my own Hive Secundus diorama using GW terrain, foam core, plasticard and milliput.Β Meanwhile, you can check out my Hive Secundus photograph on the Warhammer Community blogΒ here.
