For my Skaven army I’m in desperate need for a suitable fur colour. I don’t like the Scorched Brown/Bestial Brown of the studio army. Bestial Brown is a very intense brown quite a bit red/orange in it. I’m looking for a more natural greyish brown. I’ve tried all that was in my collection of over 150 paints but couldn’t find something I liked. Khemri Brown: too beige, Charadon Granite, P3 Bastion Grey: too grey, Calthan Brown, P3 Bootstrap Leather: too brown… I’m currently looking into P3 Battlefield Brown or Reaper Master Series Dark Skin. I’ve had the Dark Shadow of this triad but this was too dark. For my fellow readers which use one of these colours, what do you think, how do they compare? Or do you’ve got another idea?
PS: Picture is totally unrelated and shows the plastic Warlord from Island of Blood.

Yeah I tried to wash medium to light greys like Codex, Fortress and Bastion Grey and Trollblood Highlight but the problem with Devlan Mud is it doesn't work too well on dark basecoats and in the end it was too light. Looked more Greyseer like…
If you want something greyish, you could try fiddling with a light grey + Devlan Mud wash. Or maybe something like P3 Cryx Bane Highlight + Devlan Mud.
Suggestion – how about grey fur instead of brown?
Maybe it's a bit exotic, but TAMIYA produces a great range of spray colours, primarily for their historical/realistic tank, airplane and warship kits, which means that the colours come in realistic, de-saturated tones. Have a look at their "TS" range in particular, as those sprays are matte and possess solid opacity. My recommendations would be for example TS-68 WOODEN DECK, TS-62 NATO-BROWN or TS-1 RED-BROWN. Just have a look at their products yourself, most hobby retailers selling TAMIYA kits in Germany usually also have those sprays: http://www.tamiya.de/de/produkte/farben.htm
I use Vermin Brown for my Slaves, Scorched Brown for my Clan Rats, and Chardon Granite for my Storm Vermin.
I can strongly reccomend the Vallejo Model colour range, lots of nice, natural de-saturated browns.
the paints themselves are richly pigmented and airbrush well to boot 🙂
