This is the second WIP shot of these classic warriors. I’m at the freehand stage and it got me thinking about what I could ramble about in this post. I always freehand because I don’t like the the way transfers look. It’s not the shininess because you can get rid of that. It’s the computer generated look I don’t like. My miniatures are hand painted and I like my iconography to match the paint job. I also think you’re a bit restricted with decals. Not only the designs but also the size. Freehand means I can paint a design to fit the area perfectly. It’s more aesthetically pleasing to me.
Which do you prefer? Or do you do both?

I like the flames on the launchers. That's really retro. I think a mix of freehand and transfers works. Some areas need to be really uniform so I think transfers work best on those. Others, like your flames, add some personality and can be done freehand.
Thanks. I'm trying to keep it retro cool 🙂
Absolutely gorgeous colors on these, bravo!!
Freehand. Always freehand. I always get compliments on the fact that my Ultras and their vehicles have nothing but hand-painted icons and symbols. Every Ultramarine chapter symbol looks slightly different on each model, but I like it that way. It makes me feel like each Marine painted his own armor.
Very nice and crisp work as always. Are you using the "'eavy Metal recipe" you did a tutorial on?
Eavy metal recipe? Er it's my recipe. If you mean the one that was in October's WD, then that is also my recipe (and my photos actually).
But yes, apart from the red bolter and yellow shoulder pads I'm using my tutorial.
Yes, that's exactly the tutorial I meant. Hence the quotation marks 🙂
I'm still waiting for your work on the Heldrake you mentioned in your 2014 plans 🙂
I'm sure I'll get round to the Heldrake some point this year.
These are simply amazing and give the nostalgies. They hark from an era when I first started the hame.
Transfers are preferable for us mere mortals who can't paint straight. L
Garfy are you refering to the shoulder markings? I have painted any Space Marines before, but like to start up an Ultramarine squad.
I did think of creating small templates to spray the markings on.
I'm referring to all icons. I've painted flames, checks and skulls so far. I still have squad and chapter markings to do which are typically on the shoulder pads.
Very nice work, mate!
Personally, I love decals. I like their neat look, I think they're great for stuff like squad markings and save so much time. In fact I'm experimenting with custom decals for my upcoming Eldar models.
The detailing is lovely. It's amazing how much character you can get into a squad full of mono-pose marines.
Yeah and I'm not finished yet 🙂
Looking great so far mate.. but am in the same boat. I don't use decals at all, and if I want a symbol that it is done freehand. Love the old school vibe these guys are generating!
