Finally got to paint an Imperial Guard squad again! I painted a lot of those of course for my own IG armies, but I think that this squad is the prettiest I’ve ever done. They’re a mix of all kinds of bits including these metal IG heads which were released around early 2008 I think and which I thought looked really bad in pictures on the GW site, but in fact they look really good and characterful in the flesh.
Another funny thing I noticed is the detail differences between the 2004 Cadian bits and the bits from the 2008 Cadian command sprue. All I can say is digital sculpting certainly is NOT the better way to go by default. 😀
Anyway, variety and character in droves. Really cool stuff. The camouflage pattern on the camo cloaks took quite long to do, but I had to do a different camo scheme than on the rest of the uniforms whilst sticking to the colour scheme AND keep it different from the camo cloaks on the Raven Guard scouts (which I painted for the same guy). So I went for this one and it came out really, really well I think. Me gusta.
I hope that you gusta the minis as well!

What colour palette did you use for those fatigues they look great
Curious about the palette used. Is the officer's cap Rakath or a Wehrmacht green? Looks great. Has me considering repainting all my Guard. I selected and cleaned up some last night. Primer tonight and a new project for the weekend. =D
Amazing work! I've often wanted to add a small allied force of IG to my Astartes for campaigns and custom scenarios but couldn't bring myself to paint the healthy number of Guardsmen. If I could get results like this, I'd definitely be more motivated.
@Nick: Thanks very much! Indeed, go and do an IG force. It doesn't have to be 120 bodies or something. Just use some more skirmish-y rule sets. Flying Lead for squad-level stuff, 5150:Star Army, Stargrunt 2 or Tomorrow's War for "between squad and platoon level" games and so on. 🙂
@Ross Graham: Thanks, I'm not sure if I get to do that any time soon. But a look at the picture should make it pretty clear how it's done. 99.9% of painting is not about 'clever tricks', it's looking at/thinking of what you want to do and then just do it.
@Stahly: Wow. This is really baffling. I hold the Perrys in the highest of regards as sculpting goes. Clearly they already were working on lowering the expectations of clients for the complete takeover by digital designing of minis at GW. 😉
I remember the Cadian and Catachan command squad have been sculpted by the Perrys, probably one of their last sculpting job for the main range as they finished work on the LotR and Hobbits stuff. So they've been probably sculpted with old-school techniques and certainly not digital.
Would love a tutorial on those cloaks
Very nice indeed – I've often wanted to do a guard army, even started one on one occasion before giving up and selling them off. This squad looks really good though and is setting some painting juices flowing again, damnit!
