Hey folks! Uruk here after a very long hiatus, but with something really exciting! The title says it all, but meet you after the jump.
That time has finally come for me. I’ve started a second 40k army. Thanks to a very fortunate series of events, I’ve come into possession of my friends old Dark Eldar army. DE were always my next favorite after Chaos Marines, mainly thanks to their absolutely beautiful vehicles. Raiders and Ravagers always reminded me of Jabba’s desert barge from “Return of the Jedi” and the whole style of Craftworld Eldar-like sleek shapes combined with sharp edges and spikes just gets me going.
I’m in the early WIP stages really, was only able to start on the vehicles and all the infantry is just primed at this point. My color scheme was heavily inspired by two great painters – Doctor’s Faust’s Painting Clinic YouTube channel and our own Rovient, whose Orange/Black DEldar I’m deeply in love with.
Some of you might already know that I don’t really like airbrushing, but white armour and hairspray chipping technique I wanted to try out left me no other choice, at least for the vehicles. I used only two colours over the rusty undercoat – Light Sea Grey and Off White, both from Vallejo Model Color range. I also tinted the canopies with Clear Orange – I’m not a huge fan of vanilla glass and tinted canopies add so much character to the models.
I also truly hate the clear plastic flyer bases. They don’t fit with the rest of GW’s high-sided bases and just don’t like the look. Fortunately for me there’s one good thing AoS brought – an all new, huge range of different sized oval bases, which fit the Dark Eldar skimmers almost too good! I used 90x52mm cavalry bases (Skullcrushers) for Venoms and 105×70 (Ghostkeel size) for Raiders and Ravager. Those oval stands make them look even more sleek and fast.
That’s it for now, I’m trying my butt off to paint them whenever I have a free moment, but I’m in the middle of moving out to a new flat, so it takes way more longer than I’d like.
What do you think about them so far?
Congrats Uruk !
These vehicles look great !
Your color scheme would be perfect for pre heresy world eaters too !
Thanks for all the great comments folks! A lot of good points and different opinions, it really helps!
Amazing work mate! Truly. Also I happened to stumble upon this when I had my self been looking to change those dumb ass round bases for all my army (14 raider hulls,18 jetbikes,4 venoms and a couple of Talos). It was great seeing what bases sizes you used and how they fit. Have you got jetbikes and are you planning on changing their bases as well? Would be nice to see how they turn out. Cheers!
Thank you sir! I do have jetbikes (only 3 so far) and I did replace the bases – I used the smalles oval bases (60x35mm I believe) and they look great. I'll try to include them in the next WIP post so you can take a look.
I really like these colours, it reminds me of the Phyrexians from Mirrodin in Magic the Gathering. Porcelain white and sculpted with a visceral, red interior. Man I'd love to see some of the Coven models painted like that too!!
Fluff wise I don't see why people are so hung up on weathering for Deldar. Remember that much like mafia gangs, Kabals are a complicated hierarchy – some have nothing and feed off the scraps of others while plotting their ascendency. Without enough slaves and resources an Archon can't always keep his assets pristine. Nice to see this reflected here.
I agree, was thinking the same thing when designing the scheme – a lesser Kabal slowly rising to power, using whatever craft they can get until they've plundered enough resources to grab better. I personally also love the Phyrexian era from MtG, glad to see this reference. Thanks a lot!
Hari bray so far you have liked nothing on this site, and don't provide any constructive criticisms
When I saw this I thought the colour scheme is really similar to the World Eaters Heresy era haha. I must say it'll take a bit of getting use to as it's not a colour scheme I would associate with Dark Eldar or Eldar.
In saying that I like the close ups of the weathering and it looks great to me =) Thanks for sharing man!
Ha, I always wanted a white army, and since my own World Eaters are full-on chaos, I made my dream true with DE. I also fell in love with Lawrence's Ulthuan Ghosts Eldar army from Tabletop Tactics YT channel, he's been another huge inspiration I forgot to mention. Thank you!
I love the idea of the Sigmar bases. They indeed do look better and will look more in line with the rest of a DE army.
Paintwise I really like the models (so far, WIP).
Fluffwise I have no idea if some Kabal would let his vehicles get that rusty. But I wouldn't know why not? They are all about excess and only caring about themselves. I can see them (or some kabals at least) using their vehicles until they are worn, tossing them away, and then just buying new ones (consuming society 😉 ). Would fit their character.
Almost exactly what I was going for. Pillage, burn and torture before anything else. They're not Craftworld Eldar but something else entirely. Their goals and lifestyle are completely different.
Must say, I also am not a fan of the work. Dark Eldar are more elegant and refined. This does look as if it was taken from a dump and put into action. It's okay weathering. Not Great. But just out of contex for the models. It all looks a bit of a mess.
Some of them for sure, but I don't think each kabal has to be like that. Thankfully 40k fluff leaves a lot of space to create your own vision of the army you play (collect). There's been a few great points here in the comments that convinced me I made a good choice. Thanks for your input too 🙂
I think the rusted look works well. Good stuff!
Fantastic work. Really fresh new look for Dark Eldar.
Dont bloody like it. Think the weathering is too much for eldar, makes the aircraft look like it was pulled out of a junk yard.
Neeeed a tutorial on your daemons of Khorne tho.
Also a fan of Dr Faust. The weathering on these looks fantastic.
They look fantastic! What did you put down for the rusty base? I'd love a tutorial sometime if you're up for one.
I'll make one exclusively for you the next time I buy a bigger model. Thanks!
Wow, this is really lovely work Uruk. The weathering is excellent 🙂
Withe is just such a great color to have as primary color on a army, if the painter knows his or her stuff.
You truly know your stuff Uruk!
This is one heck of of a show already, can´t w8 till finished 😀
/leffegnu
– would be the less detailed shading on the inside of the Venom (?).
But that's just looking to find something to nag about with this sterling job.
🙂
Great job!
The closeup of the flyer really shows the excellent level of painting – ace!
The only downside –
Absolutely love this. Great work!
really really nice
Looks really awesome! 🙂
