I’m back from short break from the Hobby! Find out why I don’t like this model and what’s going to become of it after the jump.
I painted most of this model on a rainy monday because I had nothing else to do. I finished it off over the next couple of evenings. Once finished I felt a bit disappointed with the model.
I can’t quite put my finger on why I’m unhappy with it, but I suspect it’s to do with being tired of the hobby. I thought painting an old retro figure that won’t be added to my collections would kick start my interest. It hasn’t worked.
I’ve decided to give this figure away to a worthy cause. It’s Games Workshop Barnet’s first birthday on September 20th. I’ve given this painted model away to the store. It might be raffled, it might be a prize, one thing is for sure you’re in with a chance to win it. Check out and like GW Barnet’s Facebook page for the latest updates. P.S. I’m going to be at the birthday event, I’d love to meet some of you guys down there for a chat over some Birthday cake.
I made this teaser poster for a bit of fun 🙂

I was never a big fan of that Kharn model, until I saw this one. Very inspiring work.
Garfy, try painting something other than gw stuff? Get a darklands or bushido model, the change will sort you out!
I don't think more models is the answer.
Garfy, why did you think the 7th edition rulebook was a rip-off? You seemed to speak highly of it in your initial review.
Did you not see the bit on the all the copy and pasting? No new artwork, everything reused. Just felt ripped off after having spent a premium £50 on it. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Hey ! Have you seen this kharn ?
The painter is not a master like you but his model is cool !!

I hadn't seen that. It's really good! Thanks for sharing.
Personally as I mentioned before over on Facebook I think the model looks awesome. I wouldn't change your style for anything as it defines you as a painter. A lot of painters don't have a style and you do and you do it very nicely. I had a similar thing happen at the beginning of the year, mainly due to a couple of haters and looking at other painters who I thought where cool. Then thought screw those guys as I wouldn't be what I do today that defines who I am as a Painter whether people like it or not. Garthy your stuff has been thrown around some of the best publications for the way it looks, so don't change. Improve as you naturally will over years but don't change the style. Best tip for having fun I can give is try drinking and painting. At the same time its not the most healthy tip, but when I was at art school my main lecturer told me to try this and its actually very interesting to see what happens when doing something detailed.
I don't know if i do have a style. It's quite mainstream and generic. One thing I do try is introduce a new technique with each new army. Dark Eldar I added airbrushing, Grey Knights I added nmm blades, necrons i learnt OSL, orks was rust. Gradually over the course of the army i refine the effects. I now have a large amount of painting techniques i can pick and choose from. I'm a bit of a swiss army knife painter.
Maybe the next technique is realistic tank weathering. Maybe an Imperial Guard tank company would be good.
Thanks for the kind words. I like the drinking and painting suggestion. 🙂
You do have a style as I can easily identify your models whenever I see photos etc.
I'll agree with TEN, you do have a style. As a fellow art school alum, I know we can all get pulled in to that view that if your style is a little more mainstream, you're somehow less valuable. It's the rebel artist in us. The mainstream guys are the ones that aren't starving though.
You're only competing against yourself. As long as you're pushing yourself and picking up new techniques, you're headed the right direction. Start them Leman Russes. I want to learn that nice chipping too! Though if you're getting frustrated with crappy model quality, you may be happier with something brand new that's got new clean tools. Fantasy time? You know you want to paint Nagash.
As one of those "haters" I must say, listen to TEN. She's right about a lot there, especially the part about not getting devastated by criticism. Critique is part of the artistic process, but your self-worth is ultimately more important.
One thing that might get you out of a funk is just painting for fun. Take away the pressure of making it look a certain way and just have fun with a miniature. Choose your favorite colors, your favorite techniques and just try to paint fast and have fun. Don't post it on the blog – just keep it for yourself.
You shouldn't be a "hater" as its bad for karma.Take a slow walk with nature and observe the squirrels, maybe give them a nut if you have one in your pocket.
🙂 I got a kick out of that.
thanks!
Sad to hear of your painter fatigue. When I first started painting (for my kids who were just getting ino 40k) I had no idea what to do. One of your tutorials (a tyranid ravener) really inspired me and following it improved my skills immensly. Now, thanks to that jump start, I've steadily improved to be a pretty good painter, my models have even graced the local store window (which impressed my kids!). I don't know what to suggest to overcome the fatigue but I hope you can. You're an inspiration.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm just cheesed off with a couple of products I recently bought is all. it's hard to get behind something and really enjoy it when the product doesn't live up to your expectation. I feel ripped off by the 7th edition rulebook and mirkwood spiders.
I can understand that, I nearly fell of my chair when I read how much those awful spiders cost you. Just to echo what Verbum said though, I've told you before how I've played for years and never painted until I found your hobbit tutorials and what they've added to my hobby enjoyment. I've got no advice for you on how to get out of the slump, but just wanted to say I really appreciate how much time it must have take posting on here, sharing for free how you do something that you do so well 🙂
Garfy, I feel your pain! GW has been in the business of rip-offs for quick some time now. 7th edition is one of the biggest ripoffs – I refuse to buy it until GW offers to take back my 6th edition rulebook I spent.
To be honest with you guys on Tale of Painters – yall need to branch out some and paint figs from other manufacturers, like Corvus Belli. Garfy, I know you will like CBs new figs. I just know it.
I don't have time to paint these miniatures. I won't be buying anymore from other companies just yet. As I mentioned below. More models is not the solution.
And anywhere, I'm all good. I'm starting painting. Once these Mirkwood spiders are done I can move on.
Good luck, Garfy. You've brought us lots of lovely things to look at. I hope you get your groove back somehow. I certainly appreciate all your posts and showcases.
It's not nearly as bad as I've made out. I haven "rage quit" or anything. Just a little disinterested. However… Spiders are nearly finished and I can feel the dark cloud lifting already 🙂
Now to find a buyer who wants my 7th Ed Rulebook…
Why are you selling the 7th edition? I thought you played or are you sticking with 6th? Personally I quite like the 7th edition.
I like 7th edition. I don't like the big rulebook. Too much reused stuff from the 6th ed book. I have the mini rulebook from stormclaw so I don't need the massive £50 rule set.
Sad to hear about the feelings as of late, but I love the model – how did you paint the red armour?
Other than a break, the only thing I can really suggest is to change your painting style to keep things feeling fresh. Why not try a heavily weathered look like third eye for a while? As often as it's looked down on, drybrushing along with some streaky washes and sponge chipping can really make things exciting again and greatly increase your model turnover without completely draining/straining you.
Recently painted some scenery this way and I had more fun in that one afternoon than in days of meticulous figure painting. Yet strangely enough, I'm now itching to get back to my table and finish that same unit off… Pleasantly funny how things turn out sometimes.
I think it looks great Garfy, I really like the plasma. I think sometimes we all need a little break from doing the same things, even if we do really enjoy the hobby.
You didn't actually say why you don't like it. I'm a big fan of it and oldschool models in general so it always makes me happy to see someone else's shot at it. I love the OSL in his eyes and plasma pistol, simply great.
I did say I suspect it's because i'm tired of the hobby.
Take a vacation from the hobby. Just a few weeks were you don't paint a thing. Or play anything. You'll come back rejuvenated for painted for sure.
Just come back from two weeks away from it (you wouldn't have noticed on here, because I schedule posts).
