Hey guys, Lecoqadoodledo back with another Primaris test model. This is the last one though, as I’m pretty set on doing a Scythes of the Emperor force. The inspiration came from both the awesome colour scheme, and the fact that they are the most deserving chapter of Primaris reinforcements (as discovered in the Dark Imperium novel). I really enjoyed painting this scheme, as there’s enough going on for it to not become monotonous.
As this was a test piece, a few things will be changing on the next models I paint, specifically the black. While I’m a fan of using blue greys to highlight black, they’re simply too sharp and stark in comparison to the yellow recipe I use, and are a little too distracting. For this model, the black was base coated Abaddon black, and then the highlights progressed through Eshin Grey, Fenrisian Grey and Blue Horror. I’ll be replacing those last two highlights with Dawnstone and Administratum Grey on my next pieces, just to tone it down slightly.
The yellow was achieved with a basecoat of Averland Sunset, followed by a recess wash of Reikland Fleshshade. The highlights used were Yriel Yellow, Screaming Skull and Pallid Wych Flesh. Overall I’m pretty happy with the yellow, but I’ll be making the Pallid Wych Flesh highlight more prominent, and adding reflection spots of White Scar to the recipe so the it’s more defined.
I took a lot of care on the helmet as I’ve previously had trouble with focal points that are primarily black. I added the lens glow for that extra bit of colour, and I found that the gorget of Mk X armour really frames the helmet well with this scheme. On a side note, in typical macro shot fashion, I’ve only just noticed the red dot I got on the metal of the scope *cries internally*.
I hope you like the model, and I should have a few Reivers done for the Scythes within a week or so. Happy hobbying everyone!
This model is really selling this scheme to me, have you thought of using the forgeworld death guard powerscythes for the captains or officers? Always seemed a cool idea. Doing celestial lions myself any suggestions?
See, I really like the contrast between the blue-black and the yellow.
I think complementary colours (yellow's complimentary is actually blue, not purple; according to modern colour wheel revisions) should be worked into any colour scheme if possible. With models, I believe contrast is the biggest defining feature. Too many people are afraid to really push it. When anyone asks me for advice on how to improve their painting, I always start with making their shadows darker, and their highlights brighter.
I think pushing the yellow highlights to be the same level of brightness as the black highlights (contrast wise) would be a better way to even out the scheme, without losing the nuance.
Oh, and your cleanness is sublime, red dot be damned.
Thanks! I really appreciate your opinion on the contrast. 🙂
My main issue was how the blue-black messes with the focal points of the model, hence it being so distracting. Pushing the yellow was my first thought too. I did a small test, but the moment the yellow highlights get too stark, I just wasn't a fan of the end result because the arms and legs still draw too much attention.
You're still completely right however, if I were doing a competition level model, I'd be more than happy to push the yellow to a level where its balanced out by using my usual competition standard recipe, but as I'm going for an 'Eavy Metal style of straightforward shading and clean highlights, I'm happy to switch out to the greys.
I have still worked in some blues to the refined scheme, which I'll be able to show off soon!
That's fair enough – Looking forward to seeing more!
The other thing that might help with the vocal point is changing the bolter casing to black, yellow, or a combination of both – not only as a way of limiting the colour scheme, but also for emphasising the red spot colours on the eyes.
Mate! Love this!!! So clean and consistant! I haven't even touched a primaris yet hahaha.
Thanks Jiunn! You might get addicted if you paint one, they're so fun to work on!
I've been waffling over what chapter to pick for my pile of Imperial Models I've been accumulating over the years, and one of the options was the "Destroyers" space marines, which is very similar…you might have just tipped the scales…
You should do it! Destroyers are a great scheme, black and yellow always looks nice. Glad I could inspire a little 🙂
Fantastic looking mini!
Can't wait to see your Reivers!
Thanks! Hopefully the 3 starter Reivers don't take long, there's so much Primaris stuff I want to get to!
Hello,
very nice mini,
can you give us your red recipe pls?
Mephiston Red basecoat
Agrax Earthshade recess shade
Evil Sunz Scarlet chunky highlight
Wild Rider Red edge highlight
Fire Dragon Bright reflection spots
Very nice, I'll be doing some Agiedia company too 🙂
Totally agree they are deserving, I fell for them when listening to Daedalus audio drama, and did my first SotE to test the scheme, similar to yours with the Yellow and the highlights i'm pleased to say! Yours looks great, I went for black weapons but I like yours too. What Company are you going for and are you colouring the chest Aquila to match? I'm sticking with a generic yellow Aquila as these Nu-Marines are not yet incorporated at strength to the remaining 140ish survivors of the Chapter.
Mine now finished test scheme: https://m.imgur.com/a/3H37z
I like it, it really is an insanely fun scheme to paint! Daedalus was good inspiration, I really enjoyed it too.
I'm going for the 2nd Company, which is why I chose the gold for the Aquila. In Dark Imperium, Guilliman orders the immediate rebuilding of the Scythes with Primaris to full Chapter strength so that they can defend the Sotharan League. That's what I want my force will be based around. 🙂
I love the yellow. Ive always had problems with it, but this looks great.
Excellent work, really looks good! The only thing I would add would be a little gloss varnish to the scope lens to make it look glassy, but that's just me, there's nothing wrong with it as it is!
That will be done along with the helmet lenses in the future, after I've varnished the model. 🙂
he really looks amazing!
Thank you 🙂
