This weekend, a new season of Fantasy Football will kick off with the Blood Bowl: Third Season Edition starter set. Although I have never managed to play the “main” Blood Bowl game, I have played its “little brother” Blitz Bowl extensively instead. In this post, I present to you my collection of painted teams: Skaven, Undead, Orcs, Humans, and Dark Elves. Tutorials and tips are also included.
Blitz Bowl is the more streamlined version of Blood Bowl, which plays even faster due to the smaller teams and additional board game mechanics such as challenge cards. Blitz Bowl is not available directly from Games Workshop, but unfortunately only from selected partners in selected countries (in the USA, for example, at Barnes & Noble). If Blitz Bowl is available where you are, and you are already a fan of Blood Bowl, it is definitely worth a look.
I liked Blitz Bowl so much that I have painted a total of five teams over the years (and as I write these lines, I am already itching to expand my collection ;).
1. Skavenblight Scramblers

Anyone who has been following Tale of Painters for many years knows that I am a huge Skaven fan. It was therefore only logical that the Skavenblight Scramblers were my first Blitz Bowl team. In this post you can find more photos, and here is a free tutorial for the distinctive orange colour scheme.
2. Shambling Undead

The Shambling Undead is the team I painted most recently. I chose a classic Vampire Counts crimson, which I implemented using a Slapchop Plus technique. You can find more pictures here, and a detailed PDF tutorial is available on my Patreon account. In the tutorial, I also explain how I created the dungeon-themed bases.
3. The Gauged Eye (Orcs)

Orcs and Humans were included in the very first edition of Blitz Bowl. The Orcs are, of course, clearly inspired by the classic Goff colour scheme from 40k: black, checker pattern, and red. You can find more pictures here, and a free tutorial is available here on Tale of Painters.
4. Reikland Reivers (Humans)

My version of the Reikland Reivers is inspired by the colours of the Empire’s Nordland heraldry: blue and yellow, which I used in muted tones and combined with white and blue-grey. I don’t have a tutorial for this team, but in this post, you will find a list of all the colours used, in addition to more pictures.
5. Naggaroth Nightmares (Dark Elves)

Last but not least, we have my Dark Elves. As with the Orcs, I was inspired by an iconic 40k colour scheme: the armour is modelled on the Kabal of the Black Heart of the Dark Eldar, combined with cyan clothing and muted green tones for the scales. You can find more pictures here.

Quite a few new models have been released since I painted my last team. I just can’t decide what I want to paint next. I always thought Lizardmen were cool, or maybe Nurgle? Elven Union, well, Elves are always an option, perhaps a High Elves team will be released soon? Or something exotic like Amazons, mmh…
What’s your favourite Blood Bowl / Blitz Bowl team? What team do you plan to play in the upcoming season? Feel free to drop a comment below, I’m also happy to answer any questions on our friendly hobby Discord server. Thanks a lot, and happy hobbying!
