I use acrylic liquid filler. Vallejo make an excellent plastic putty but GW's liquid green stuff is pretty good too. I think it very slightly with a tiny bit of medium and give the areas a light coat. Leave it to dry for a good while and then very gently smooth it back with a tiny piece of 400 grade sandpaper attached to the end of an old brush with a bit of blue tack. 🙂

How are you planning on smoothing out the surface of the banner? Got an Ork warboss whose arm is a bit lumpy after some GS work so I'd be interested in hearing about this.
