Today it’s my turn to take a look back at my year of hobbying. Check out all the models I painted in 2019 in one handy post, and find out what I’m up to in 2020 – after the jump.

2019 Resolution Recap

Last year I vowed to paint my remaining Necromunda bulkhead terrain and Sector Mechanicus structures – fail. But I’ll tackle them soon, promised.

I vowed to paint at least 5 skirmish sized warbands – check. I didn’t paint a Genestealer Cults Kill Team or Goliath Gang as I planned last year, but managed to paint a Primaris Silver Skulls kill team, two Underworlds warbands, and three Blitz Bowl teams (plus turning five existing Skaven Blood Bowl players into a complete Blitz Bowl team).

I didn’t paint anything Eldar, shockingly. However, 2019 was finally the year to paint the Land Raider Crusader I bought like 7 or 8 years ago, a model that nagged on my conscience since a couple of years.

What I actually painted

43 infantry sized models, a Land Raider Crusader, 12 Blitz Bowl balls and markers, and I rebased 5 existing Skaven models to fit the Blitz Bowl board design. Not too bad, but hopefully I’ll be able to increase my painting output in 2020 even more 🙂

January – Remaining four models of Zarbag’s Gitz

February and March – Silver Skulls Primaris Kill Team

April – Skaven Thrower, ball and markers, plus rebasing of five existing models to create a Blitz Bowl Skaven team, Ork Blitz Bowl team

May – Human Blitz Bowl team

June/July – Space Marine Heroes from Space Marine Adventures

July/September – Librarian in Phobos Armour for my Silver Skulls Kill Team, Dark Elves Blitz Bowl team for #taleoftuesdays

September – Brother Dolor for Space Marine Adventures

October – Lady Harrow’s Sorrowflight, some Warcry terrain

November – Ultramarines Land Raider Crusader

December – Ylthari’s Guardians for #taleoftuesdays

2019 hobby highs

In terms of new releases, I really enjoyed Warcry’s completely new setting with its focus on six/seven all-new Chaos tribes, and also its expansion into a fully-fledged Age of Sigmar skirmish setting. Ossiarch Bonereapers were pretty cool, another new faction with a very unique “Age of Sigmar” feel, expanding the design language of Nagash into a proper army. Also, 2019 was the year of finally getting a new plastic Aspect Warrior kit, as well as a really cool Jain Zar sculpt.

In terms of painting, I learnt to make more out of washes with the help of Tyler Mengel’s fantastic tutorials, and the release of Contrast paints played into that and added even more new tricks to paint more efficiently. I finally made the switch to a proper wet palette after what, 20 years of hobbying? Not only helps to keep paints the right consistency, but also saves a lot of time, as I can quickly switch between several colours without having to look for the right paint pot, opening and closing it, putting it back, and so on.

I reviewed a lot of Army Painter products this year, which helped to complete my tools and paint collection. I’m especially fond of their Anti Shine Matt Varnish spray, which has a really nice finish and has become my go-to varnish.

I also started an Instagram account with over 3.300 followers as of now, and you can also find me on Twitter, so follow me for some classic paint jobs and some banter that’s not covered on this blog.

Last but not least, sometimes older stuff has to go, and I parted ways with my Blood Angels collection to make some room for new stuff and ideas. Maybe not really a hobby high but a necessary evil 😉

2020 hobby resolutions

In 2020 I’d like to paint:

– at least five more skirmish sized warbands

– Jain Zar and a squad of Banshees for my Eldar of Iybraesil

– some more characters for my existing collections

– my remaining classic Necromunda bulkhead terrain and the remaining Sector Mechanicus stuff

I’d also love to visit Warhammerfest and meet up with my fellow bloggers, enter Armies on Parade for the first time, and get a hang of playing Warhammer Underworlds with the upcoming Underworlds PC game.

Some ideas for possible painting projects would be the Thorns of the Briar Queen expanded with some extra models to be also usable as a warband in Warcry, a Goliath Gang for Necromunda (that could maybe be combined with my terrain collection for an Armies on Parade entry), a Chaos kill team with a lot of cultists (that could also be expanded to become a Chaos Cult for Necromunda), and a Genestealer Cult Kill Team. But I also got Spiteclaw’s Swarm, Ironsouls’ Condemnors and Thundrik’s Profiteers, and I’m also interested in the rumoured Sisters of Khaine warband. I won’t be able to paint them all, but I’m eager to see what will make the cut 🙂

Happy new year!
