So I’ve finished assembling the Fire Dragons and Yriel. Yriel was tough, both arms needed pinning which wasn’t easy because his arms are pretty thin. Maybe Finecast wasn’t too bad an idea at all? Well, then I look at his thin staff and how long it would have taken to straighten it with a hair dryer or hot water…
I primed the Dragons with Army Painter Leather Brown primer, which comes in handy as their armour will be brown. I’ve also drybrushed the bases and started basecoating the white helmets. I’m going to paint them in batches of three. Stay tuned!

Stahly lives in Craftworld Hamburg, located in the north of Germany. He has been involved with Warhammer since childhood and has painted several armies and countless warbands and kill teams over the decades. When he's not painting miniatures incredibly slowly, he's writing tutorials and testing the latest miniature paints, hobby tools and kits. He founded Tale of Painters to pass on his knowledge and bring inspiration to your hobby.
Yes Eldar. Good to see you working on the Eldar again!!
Thanks,
Matt
It's better than Purity Seal because it's not as glossy. I can't comment on the Vallejo spray varnishes but the Toom varnish is the best I had so far.
Is the varnish much better than the Purity Seal or the different Vallejo varnishes?
I started with the Tabletop hobby last year and I'm afraid of ruining my miniatures using the purity seal. I've seen some terrible accidents.
@Kai
Then you need to check out Rev's Eldar, which feature brown Fire Dragons, too: http://taleofpainters.blogspot.com/2012/02/showcase-eldar-skimmer-army.html
Btw I'm using this varnish: http://www.toom-baumarkt.de/qualitaetsmarke/farben-und-lacke/spruehlacke/universal-spruehlack/ use the clear satin varnish. It's excellent, very matt and very hard to mess up your models.
@Angusin
I think it 8 or 9 coats unfortunately 😉
Hi Stahly,
How many coats of white over the brown? hehehe
Brown Fire Dragons… exotic. Don't think that I've ever seen such a thing anywhere before, so I'm pretty interested in the result (whose awesomeness will of course be completely out of question in Stahly's case…)!
Sag mal, was für einen Lack benutzt du eigentlich für deine Modelle?
It's excellent 😉 It covers so moothly, and the medium brown is an excellent undercoat for a lot of colours. It makes a great alternative to grey primer.
You love the brown primer 😉
