If the cultists weren’t enough to break my hobby spirits, then these Spiders have totally finished me off. I was really excited to get these and at £66 for 6 models it was a bit of a luxury treat. However upon opening the boxes I was truly disappointed with the small delicate models. The legs have hardly any contact areas and were a nightmare to assemble. I had to add lots of greenstuff and push the legs into that and then resculpt.
I tried to regain some enthusiasm for the project by making scenic Mirkwood bases. I sculpted roots, logs and branches and added some rocks. Then I realised I paid £66 for something and I’m trying to make it interesting. Disenchanted, I shelved the project and I’m now on hobby hiatus for the foreseeable future. See you soon!

Maybe you could pick up some Reaper Bones Spiders to help fill out their ranks a bit. If you don't mind non-GW that is. http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/spider/latest/77126#detail/77126_w_1
I'd stick with them. The price of the models is evil. But I think with you painting them they would turn out pretty darn good and creepy looking.
Ahh I'm sorry to hear, though I should probably warn a friend of mine that he should avoid making that all Mirkwood Spiders army now…
Still, I hope you enjoy the break, I've scaled back majorly from my wargaming hobbying as well (The Hobbit is the only thing I still bother with and I'm trying to sell all of my 40k/Hordes stuff.)
If it helps, your Hobbit posts have been one of the major reasons I decided to stick with the Hobbit instead of dropping that too.
I look forward to seeing your work again, but until then, have a great break.
(Sorry if I posed this twice, ran into some issues logging in)
Take the break. Nothing worse than when this hobby starts to feel like work.
I have had the inverse problem – a work-travel imposed break that has kept me away from the hobby table. My creative juices are firing and now that I return tomorrow my real problem is deciding what of my many projects I want to tackle.
The spiders are tough models and certainly not worth the price I agree with Aulan Haines try having a game or 2 with your hobbit models and that might get your spirits up again, either that or watch the desolation of Smaug for inspiration.
Don't give up just yet we all love your work and after a short break I'm sure you will enjoy painting them again.

I'm in a similar situation. I've taken to playing X-Wing as I don't have to do anything hobby related and it's pure gaming. When I finally pick up the paintbrush again I'm going to have a go at Infinity. Much more fun to play and less models to paint, also it's a breath of fresh air to not have to paint skulls on skulls on skulls.
Sounds like it's time to start a new army or start in on Fantasy!
Enjoy the time away Garfy. I'd read some Horus Heresy novels or something. The spiders are horrible. I sold mine for bits because I didn't feel the price warranted me having to sculpt a model further. The poses were bland. Go enjoy your family and check in every now and again on PYGS for motivation. Best of luck sir.
Have you considered putting the brushes down and just playing with the models you have painted for a while? I know that personally, where I love painting my models, I dislike never playing them.
Don't give up too soon I love your projects do a nice Eagle or LOTR troll for fun now
