Funnily enough I did the bases first on my assassins. Although more because I'm trying to up my painting skills and for some reason I'm a lot more confident with bases than anything else…
The other thing I do to gain to some motivation is just paint some thing from an army I don't collect I.e. Left over minis from box sets (I collect armies of the imperium) so I have loads of nids left over from deathstorm for example so just paint one of them and experiment. Painting up execution force I keep taking inspiration breaks with the cultists or chaos sorcerer. Although I'm a sporadic painter so painting it in parts suits me, of course it means I end up with everything half finished. Only have the vindicare, turn counter and 3 cultists finished lol
I always seem to do the base dead last, but that's likely due to the time when I learned how to paint miniatures (the 'Eavy Metal "red period") and how this was always done last in the tutorials. I've moved away from it a little as my basing schemes have become more involved, but I still feel like its the last thing I should paint, and it 'completes' the model.
Yeah dude. I find a good audio book can keep me pinned to the table for hours and the time flies by. Also, sometimes just building and painting a bitz box mini without any real goal can help kickstart the creativity 🙂
I choose to listen to an Audio Book that I only listen to when painting. That way if I want to know what happens I have to carry on painting.
Bases add so much character. Even if the rest is just undercoated. So how did you do it? is there a tutorial?
Seconded. I love the bases – even a list of the paints used would be great. Like some other I like to put on an audiobook so even if I feel I'm slogging my way through some tedious painting I can enjoy myself, then at the end..hey, some part painted minis I'm motivated to finish.
I always paint the face first, having that little characterful bit done makes me more likely to crack on and get them finished I think! It's only a tiny area, but having a bit finished feels like I've gotten more done than a mini with a bunch of base coats done…
I always paint the texture of the base first so I don't hit the feet of the model while drybrushing later on.
I really love the Culexus Assassin, in my opinion he's got the best pose, so menacing. Would love to add one to my Blood Angels collection. Hope they'll be available seperately soon.
Its only the culexus assassin I don't like in the new range. Something about his pose in the flesh I find that makes him look like he's startled rather than menacing
It is a pretty nasty trick you used on yourself, Garfy:-) The bases look great, whichever way you did them! I have a different approach…and it seems to be a wrong one – I paint the bases separately and attach the models (pinned to a cork) later on. This has resulted into quite a few minis done with bases I cannot force myself to finish. Will try your approach for the next set of models. Keep up the good work, Garfy! Tomas
