While I put the final finishing touches to my Assault Squad, I started assembling and basecoating my next project: Captain Cato Sicarius. I bought this model in white metal soon after it was released. Since then he laid dormant, but now his time to shine has come.
I always felt Sicarius is a pretty odd model that shares very few cues with other Ultramarine character models. His armour is very peculiar – Techmarine-y style legs, Blood Angels style ornaments on his breastplate. He reminds me a bit of early press-mould Scibor models. I also never liked the head the model came with because it had very exaggerated cheekbones, so I replaced it with a similar head from the Deathwatch Kill Team sprue.
What do you think? Have you painted a copy of Sicarius, too? Share your models in the comments section, I need some inspiration!

The armour itself is fine- he's using MKII crusade armour legs with a variety of other bits of armour- up to a MKVII helm. I don't have a problem with ornate ultras either-even though he seems to have been decorated from the head down- ornate headcrest, super ornate pauldrons, fancy chestplate, reinforced buckle/gut protection and then standard legs slightly obscured by his tabard.
It's the pose that kind of kills it for me. His sword is sheathed but his pistol is drawn, and doing nothing in particular. He looks like he is watching/overlooking a battle but not really participating.
They could have left his pistol holstered and had him gesturing in challenge or command. It's why the black reach captain remains my favourite Cato model, with twin lightning claws mohawk Cato a close second.
Yeah, I know what you mean. They went for a stoic leader pose, when in the background he is described as headstrong, a leader from the front and excellent swordsman. I think an action pose with a drawn sword would have been closer to his character.
If you have the 2011 'Eavy Metal Masterclass book, there is a wonderfully painted example of Sicarius, and the step by step instructions, by Joe Tomaszewski. Not sure if that helps, but I don't paint a lot of Ultramarines!
Yeah, I got that masterclass in an old WD as well. My paint job will be a bit different though. My banner will be blue instead of white for example. Stay tuned 🙂
