Chat: Stahly’s 2019 Hobby Resolutions and Recap of 2018

You know the drill – every year we take a look back at our hobby year and present all the models we painted. Here comes my recap. Join me as I revive my fondest hobby moments of 2019 – after the jump.

2018 Resolution Recap

My main vow for 2018 was to complete the repainting/reworking of my classic Ultramarines collection (CHECK!!!). I didn’t manage to add a new centrepiece model though (fail), I also didn’t work on my Skaven Blood Bowl team (fail), but I managed to add an Autarch, a Farseer Skyrunner and a Windrider Squad to my Craftworld Iybraesil warhost (check). I also painted a lot of unanticipated stuff, like test models for a Harlequin Troupe and Imperial Fist Kill Team, a Chainrasp Horde, and lots and lots of both modern Sector Mechanicus and classic Necromunda bulkhead terrain (check). So overall, not too bad of a hobby year!

What I actually painted

A total of about 22 new models, 57 more models I extensively reworked, plus loads and loads of terrain (a box of STC Ryza Pattern Ruins, Thermic Plasma Conduits, Munitorum Containers, Alchomite Stacks each, plus about 2/3 of the bulkheads of the original Necromunda box). Not too shabby.

January – Ultramarines Command Squad (2 new models which were painted in 2017, 5 reworked models) and a Rhino/Razorback (new model with a reworked turret)

February – Ultramarines Rhino/Whirlwind and Vindicator (reworked models)

March to April – Ultramarines Tactical Squads I (2 and a half new models, 7 and a half reworked models) and II (minor reworks), Sternguard Veterans (all reworked models)

May – Ultramarines Drop Pod, Stormtalon, Scouts and Dreadnought (all reworked models)

June – Ultramarines Venerable Dreadnought, Thunderfire Cannon, Scouts and Close Combat Terminator Squad (all minor reworks)

July – Ultramarines Captain in Terminator Armour (minor rework)

June and July – Harlequin Player of the Masque of the Dance without End (test model) and Autarch of Craftworld Iybraesil

August to October – Craftworld Iybraesil Windriders and Farseer Skyrunner, Nighthaunts Chainrasp Horde, Imperial Fist Primaris Intercessor (test model)

November to December – STC Ryza Pattern Ruins, Thermic Plasma Conduits, Alchomite Stacks, Munitorum Containers

December – Necromunda Cardboard Terrain and first three models of Zarbag’s Gitz

2018 hobby highs and lows

Very few lows and a lot of highs, really. Games Workshop continues to deliver on all fronts. I still have some minor gripes about the new Necromunda – I don’t like the updated designs of the gangs or the drab presentation of the rulebook, but I’m even warming up about Age of Sigmar, Primaris Marines and the ongoing narrative of 40k. There were some great releases – turning Kill Team into a properly supported game system, Soul Wars and the Nighthaunts range, Custodes, more Warhammer Underworlds warbands, Rogue Trader, Black Fortress. With the Spiritseer from Wake the Dead we even had a new Craftworld model!

As for my personal hobby, managing to complete the repainting of my Ultramarines collection was super satisfying – been working on this for a couple of years now, and it feels great to tick this off the list. I also had a lot of fun painting all the terrain and especially working on the classic Necromunda cardboard buildings. It’s always been a dream to own a painted set of these, since I played my own and only Necromunda campaign when I was about 17, before me and my mates from back then scattered to go to university or start apprenticeships.

2019 hobby resolutions

First and foremost, I want to complete my Necromunda terrain collection by painting the remaining cardboard buildings from the classic starter set and the Outlaws expansion. I could also see painting some Sector Imperialis buildings. Apart from that, 2019 will be the year of warbands and Kill Teams. As I own large Ultramarines, Iybraesil and Dark Eldar collections, I want to concentrate on smaller, easier to complete projects that provide more variety in painting.

Therefore, I want to paint at least five warbands, Kill Teams or gangs (including Zarbag’s Gitz, which I just started). I could see painting the rumoured Kharadon and Sylvaneth warbands, I also got Spiteclaw’s Swarm lying about, would like to do a Primaris Kill Team, maybe a Genestealer Cult Kill Team that could work for Necromunda, too, or some of the new Goliaths or even some classic Van Saar models? Let’s see how 2019 turns out. I guess we’ll also see some cool models coming out of nowhere – the rumoured Blackstone Fortress expansions, and finally new Sisters of Battle.

But I also don’t want to neglect my Craftworlders and classic Non-Primaris Ultramarines, so I want to paint at least something for them, too. Maybe 2019 will finally be the year of painting the Land Raider that sits for over 5 years in my closet? 😉
