The 4th Edition of Age of Sigmar is just around the corner and the Darkoath are one of the last factions to be released in the tail end of 3rd Edition AoS. They’ve been long overdue a release and today I’ll share a Darkoath Chieftain and his Marauders that I recently painted, I’ll also share my biggest paint recipe ever.

A Chieftain stands over the charred ruins of a rival tribe’s settlement.

The strongest and mightiest warriors become the leaders of the Darkoath tribes, years of fighting, honing their death dealing skills and taking uncountable number of heads to fulfil their oaths. Mounted on a warsteed, no one can outrun him as he charges at his target, they have only one hope and that is to stand and fight.

Models were kindly supplied to me by Games Workshop. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Do you remember the children’s game buckeroo?

I’ve decided to go for quite a muted colour scheme and trying to keep it realistic for my Darkoath. Lots of brown leathers. For a spot colour, I’ve gone for a warm, yellow bronze/goldy colour. I think it really grabs your eye.

I’ve painted my bases the same as my existing Slaves to Darkness models, although I’m now thinking I will branch off in a new direction with this Slaves to Darkness army. A new edition is a good excuse to start a new army and I think I want to paint a Host of the Everchosen force with that lovely classic Black and Gold armour. Check out the test scheme I posted on twitter/X.

How to Paint Darkoath Marauders

Here’s my paint recipe card, if this doesn’t put you off painting an army of Marauders I don’t know what will. So many steps, but honestly it’s actually quite simple. The base coat is Zandri Dust and that forms the basis for a lot of parts of the model such as the light brown cloth, or horns etc. Zandri Dust is also a nice colour to paint over for some of the other base coats such as grey cloths or dark leather.

Batch painting is nice and easy as there are so many different areas to paint each step tends to be a small area like a little bit of grey cloth or something, so you’re constantly moving through the production line of models quickly, not like a Space Marine batch paint where painting a large area of armour drags on and on. If that makes sense?

I’m looking forward to 4th Edition Age of Sigmar, even though a whole host of my Warcry warbands are being removed from the army list and moved to Legends. I’m disappointed, but like I said earlier, I just think I’m going to start a new Chaos army. Ultimately having different Slaves to Darkness Armies is a pretty cool idea, because they’ll all fight under the banner of Archeon (or Be’lakor). Watch this space for more updates.
