I’ve done it! I’ve broken the will of the C’tan and entrapped the malevolent energies into my Tesseract Vault by finishing the model. What a relief! It was a real hard slog but I’m so happy to have finished it. Loads more pictures after the blog including a great comparison shot with some of my other large oval based models.
I like shots like these. This give a great impression just how big this model is. It’s actually comparable in size to the Tyranid Hierophant biotitan and that costs £250. At £95 I think this kit is pretty amazing value for money. It’s huge and devastating on the battlefield, who wouldn’t want one?
It’s quite difficult to photograph. it’s hard to get light to all the outer surface and the inner Ctan in equal measure. The photography boys in White Dwarf should deserve a medal for managing to photograph the Tesseract Vault so well.
The four above shots show some different angles. As you can see, it’s the same all the way round. Not that interesting. In some of the shots the supports for the corners look a little spindly and weak. Some of the corners look like they’ve drooped as well. It actually feels really solid in real life.
This top shot shows the model for what it really is, quite sparse on the inside. I still think it’s an extremely clever use of just two sprues (one is repeated 4 times) to create such a large model. As a design piece it’s so clever and the fact it can make two different models is great news for Necron players.
This is an interior shots. You can see it’s covered in raised details and teeming with scarabs.
Arrrgh! The C’Tan has escaped his bonds. I magnetised the Canoptek Sentinel and the C’Tan so I could remove him and use the model as a regular C’Tan in normal games.
Let me know in the comments if you enjoyed following this big project. Do you prefer my big projects to the smaller ones?

Love it always.
Definitely worth the time and effort, it's a piece that will look simply stunning on the battlefield.
I hear you on the price front though, you seem to be paying for the size of the model as opposed to the amount you get in the box.
I shall never moan about having to paint an entire tact squad again. Great job completing this beast. Let's see it in WDD now.
A massive congrats from me! The paint work is awesome and the colour scheme really suits the model.
Very nice work, and as you say the figures has a very good report, quality-size / price.
I'm really okay for photography, bring in enough light in every corner is not simple.
Have you got a link to your photograph of your tesseract vault?
The paint job is fantastic Garfy but its a real shame the model looks so droopy. It ruins its powerful and malevolent appearance.
Mindblowing!
Awesome looking paint scheme on this crazy looking model. Like the others have said, the mix of red, blue, and black came out really well together.
And I agree wholeheartedly with being desensitized to GW pricing after buying from FW. I bought a Warhound titan a while back and that was crazy expensive… But painting the thing and getting to look at it everyday has made it worth every penny to me. 😀
happy for people to discuss pricing. I don't think it's a rant. We're all passionate about this hobby. We love it. I can see why people would feel disenchanted by the the costs of the models when they see the size of the sprue. Stahly you don't own any forge world models do you, where as Nick and I have some pretty large forge world models. I think once you're use to FW prices you're a little more desensitised to GW pricing.
The "cleverness" of the recent GW plastic Apoc stuff has to be admired, and their profit margin per model has to be incredible. The Lord of Skulls is also only 2 unique Sprues I think as well, but the repackaged Baneblade has 9 unique in it and is cheaper…I am sure my store still has not sold either of the Tesseract of LoS kits they had in since Apoc relaunched.
Either way, GW policy and pricing is what it is and we shall still buy it because they are still on the whole the best models out there and we love it!
But lets not turn Garfys work into a GW rant, lets admire the work and patience to get the thing done.
Spectacular painting, the contrast between the dark reds and the glowing blues is awesome.
But an amazing value model? As you said the model is sparse on the inside. The closed version is only slightly bigger than a Monolith. And the sprue design is clever… but only for GW's calculation. They only had to design and tool two different large sprues (a Dark Eldar Raider for example has two different large sprues, too, and is what? 22,50 pounds?). Including multiple copies of the same sprue only costs them pennies as the inital development costs have already been covered. And the look of the model really suffers from it – you can easily tell that all four corners are the same – copy'n'paste design. The model looks like a cake cut neatly cut into four pieces, not a cage forcefully ripped open. If they would have at least included three different sprues then they could have made the rips of the corners more irregular from which the model would have benefitted a lot.
As it is, I think the model shouldn't have been more expensive than a Wraithknight (and then a Wraithknight should have had the price of a Riptide… and a Riptide should have had the price of a Tervigon/Tyrannofex to begin with). But then GW's pricing has become really outrageous now when I look at the price list of next month's Space Marine release.
YES!!!!! Well done mate, a slog and a half to this bad boy by hand but now its done 🙂 So when the first game gonna be using it?! And more importantly, whats next?! I vote for FW Sentry Pylon formation 😛
