While my Avatar is waiting for his transfers to show up in the post, I started working on this Dark Eldar Haemonculus. I haven’t painted something for my Dark Eldar collection in a while, and when the new Dark Eldar models were released, I knew I had to get this sculpt. It’s stunning. It draws a lot of inspiration from Urien Rakarth and the Finecast Haemonculus, but takes it to a new level. It’s so 3D and consists of so many different layers, yet it’s also the most difficult model to assemble of this size I’ve ever worked with.
It’s so frail and delicate, I’ve put it on a 32mm base to prevent it from toppling over. Yet I managed to snap off and lose a piece, so I had to rebuild some areas (won’t tell you which lol). GW is definately moving away from gaming pieces to collector pieces. It also shows on the recent Mechanicus and Skitarii models, which fall apart if you give them a mean glance. While I count myself as a collector more than a gamer, I think with GW’s skills of making plastic miniatures they should be able to design cool models that stand the stress of gaming. What do you think?
Oh dear. Sorry to hear about the difficulty in assembling this model, especially as I've got one of my own sitting in the blister pack on my shelf >_<
It looks like it came together wonderfully in the end, but do you have any advice for assembling the model? In particular, would you advise doing anything as a sub-assembly for painting? In particular, I'm curious how you dealt with the model's shoulder and back, where there's that delicate, fiddly ornate shoulder pad and the (per GW) "spinal sump" of organs and goo- so much detail in such a small area…
Love the blend to dark pink/purple on the spine/tail.
Is it glazes?
The skin and spine was painted as described in this tutorial: http://taleofpainters.blogspot.de/2013/03/tutorial-how-to-paint-dark-eldar.html Then I build up the gradient with several layers of Carroburg Crimson mixed 1:1 with Lahmian Medium. On the dark purple areas, I applied two layers of pure Carroburg Crimson. Then I layered P3 Sanguine Highlight, leaving the recesses dark. For the gradient, I mixed Sanguine Highlight with successive amounts of P3 Midlund Flesh. For the first highlight, I mixed Sanguine Highlight with successive amounts of P3 Ryn Flesh, and then repeated the process with Sanguine Highlight and VGC Pale Flesh. Probably not the fastest way but I tinkered around with the effect until I was happy.
Thanks for your very in depth reply, much appreciated. Can't wait to see this finished.
